85 4cyl carb xtra cab long bed 4x4 opinions?
I recently bought a 85 4cyl carb xtra cab std. bed 4x4 and it is rough shape. I have gotten most of the thing wrong w/it worked out, but there are still a few things that do need to be fixed as far as functionality. The body on it is pretty beat up. the bed and wheel wells in the bed are beat and one of the wells has a small hole in it. The doors are dented pretty well, not huge dents, but pretty dented. There is rust on the tail gate and the rear fender wells. The front of the truck is pretty straight with the exception of a little dent in the hood and a fender that is a little torqued. The truck must have over 200k miles on it although the real mileage is unknown because of a previous owner's attempt to do an sr5 gauge swap. The engine on my current truck was also supposedly rebuilt 60k ago.
The new truck I found:
85 4cyl carb xtra cab long bed 4x4
Body nearly perfect condition
a little underbody rust on rear fender well
the truck has bucket seats
has the bench
the interior is in prestine condition w/the exception a couple small things that can be easily fixed.
110k original miles and the engine has been rebuilt
single owner since bought new
No major problems that I am aware of
I'm not sure if I should buy the new truck and sell the old because the new one i found hasn't been abused and has probably over a 100k miles less on it.
Also they only want $2k for it. Retired couple.
The only hesitation I have w/it is that it's a long bed. Any input on a longbed vs std. bed? Pros/cons for daily driving and offroading?
I know the longbed has a longer wheel base for the extracabs, at least this is what I have read somewhere.
Any input would be awesome because I go to look at it tomorrow morning at 9am and will decide very shortly after on what I would like to do.

i personally love my long bed i dont do a bunch of hardcore trails just moderate stuff and i havent had a problem yet with the length, mine is a reg cab so i have almost no room in the cab i can put a dirtbike in my bed and still close the tailgate and i can put a toolbox in the back and still put a dirtbike in it comfortably i like the extra space a lot and if it ever becomes a problem i can always bob it or section it

yeah... I was just wondering what some people's thoughts were on off roading and having the longer wheel base. Is this a major downside or is it better etc....
Thanks for the input though. That helps and is pushin me more towards the one in better condition.
More input anyone?

It really depends on the type trail or obstacles. Sometimes longer wheel base rigs do better. You will only be limited on steep takeoffs , but more stable elsewhere. I would say unless you run the Rubicon or Moab frequently, longbed is fine.
Pros: You can stuff it full of gear, owned by retired couple, carbed 85, 110k
Con: You obviously are going to be limited on take off angle.
Example: borrowing pic from scaldeddog,Imagine a samuri tryin to hump over this? Can you say high center, backwards rollover?

maybe i'm just off the rocker here, but according to wiki they only made the xtra-cab in standard bed? I swear the bed of the truck i'm looking at is longer than mine, but I'm going to take some measurements when I get home.
Wheelbase:
Regular Cab: 103.0 in (2616 mm)
Regular Cab Long Bed: 112.2 in (2850 mm)
Xtracab: 121.5 in (3086 mm)
Xtracab V6: 121.9 in (3096 mm)

I will have some pics up as soon as possible. We have been hit by a pretty decent storm. We have about ten inches of snow right now and are expected to get another 10 over night plus another 3-4 over tomorrow.
