85 22re automatic totally guttless
I have a 85 toyota with 22re and the 4 speed automatic. The truck has no power on take off. I'm trying to figure out if thats just the nature of these automatics or if something is wrong. Is there any differance between the moters for the 5-speed to the auto, because my moter came out of a 95 4runner with a 5-speed.

just 31 i wouldnt think they would slow it down to much. i should just swap in the manual i have from an 86 i tore apart. thats the plan just hoped to run the auto for awhile while i was being lazy

its just stock i bought the truck 4 years ago it was suppose to just need a headed gasket. found out the head had a spun cam bearing and the crank had a spun bearing started a rebuild and found out all 3 of the other 22re heads where cracked. so i found this moter to just throw in till i can get a head and finish the rebuild i already have an engbldr crawler cam and i hope to throw a header and a heavier flywheel when i install the new moter

Even with stock 28 inch tires, 5 speed tranny, headers, 2 1/4 inch exhaust, and 1200 miles on a rebuilt engine, my 87' 4runner is still pretty gutless. Sorry, don't think there's anything wrong with your truck.

my 86 had the 22r with a 5speed and 35s so i understand these trucks are guttless but if this is normal i don't see how the auto was ever sold
i got tired of it and put a 283 chevy v8 in the 86 i accully got better fuel economy with the v8 then the 4cyl go figure

Unlock your hubs, put it in 4low (2low) punch it, and when you hit 4th throw it into 2wd and continue driving. If it has the speed of a normal car by doing that, it's fine. If you have a 2wd I don't know then...

It probably won't grind. It'll just explode.... I don't recommend high speed shifts on the gear driven cases. Toyota says something like 5mph or less to shift between 2wd, 4wd, high-lo. Chain drive cases are much easier to shift into 4hi at 30-50mph.

my buddy ran 36s on stock gears on a 22re with a manual trans, he said it wasnt bad, 12 mpg and never hit 5th gear, but he got the job one and it was still a monster in the mud, what do you get for mpgs? maybe full tune up time? seafoam it? youd be amazed on how much seafoam and a good tune can do, also check your timing

Gears dont make that big of a difference in mpgs. Its the fact that its the auto.
I ran my 83 with 35x14.5 boggers (super heavy tire) and i still got 19-20 mpg
but it was slow. Not too terrible, but there is NO using 4hi.

Both my auto trucks (a340h, one a 22re and the other a 3vz) both syncro themselves before shifting from low to high....
As for my 88 (3vz with the r151 5 speed and vf1a chain tcase) you need to rev match that one to make the shift from low to high.
We've been doing it for years trying to get that extra umphh off the line, given it was a farm trim and we just beat it and raced it arous not caring if it blew up or not. But now 5 years later it's still going strog and I use that trick whenever I need to get up to speed real quick
