85 22re 5sp efi poping out of 3rd gear! help
quick background.... new truck to me, got it with a rblt motor but needed a bunch of other stuff, one of them being the clutch.
before the clutch it was slipping but not poping out of gears.
since the new clutch it poped out about half a dozen times out of 3rd.
i'm wondering did a new/strong clutch make some tranny problems come to light?
i tried to pin down when this happens and it seems to be only doing it on decelaration on flats or downhills in low rpm's. does not happen pulling, accelerating, uphills or high rpms.
i thought i maybe just didn't get it into gear so after the first cpl times i made sure to shove it into gear real good and it still happened.
also as a side note, the levar seems to be moved more forward now since dropping the tranny for the clutch job. is there any adjustment on the position of the levar to movie it back? my knuckles are hitting the dash now.
thanks, pete

My W56 (in a 1985 4 Runner w/ EFI) has a problem where when I am at a stop and then put it into 1st gear 50-70% of the times it will 'pop' out of gear. So, when I come to a stop light I have to put it into 1st, then hold it there and slightly let out the clutch until I feel it 'settle' in the rest of the way. I was told it was possibly a synchro. I wonder if your problem is similar/identical to this and possibly could be a synchro as well! If I am not on the right page, someone please chime in and correct me!!

i don't know trannys but...
thought synchros were only an issue when starting (so in your case, yes, that may be it) but my prob is 3rd gear, once rolling, at over 15/20mph.
the main thing i'm wondering is how long can i drive like this and/or/if how fast will it get worse. i'm not into pulling the tranny again and paying for a rebuild and don't want to swap in a used one to have it crap out on me a year later either. kinda of a dissapointing spot to be in right now. i was hoping there is some kind of adjustment?

This was just my understanding of how it works.....

right, right...
how that you put it that way....it does make sense.
anyone else have any ideas? i want some good news like "hey, don't worry about it, it happens (i know it doesnt!)" or "ya, it happends b/c the levar is too far forward but you can adjust it".

bent shift fork??
wonder if i could have bent that putting the tranny back in? do i have to pull the trans out again to check (straighten/replace if neccessary?).
or, can i drive like that? is it going to get progressively worse??

mine used to pop out of second on downshifts pretty often. it did get progressively worse over time but I sold the truck before I fixed it so never found the cause. I used to haul back on the shifter as hard as I could to hold it in gear if I really needed the downshift. sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't!

That Lever seat is accessible without pulling the tranny. Yo just need to take off the cover the rubber boots are attached to on the floor of your interior. It's the steel plate where both the transmission and transfer case levers are. It has like 6, 8 or 10 screws in it. You then take the shifter out and check the bushing the larger ball rides on.
