84 toyota pickup

Hey guys anyone have any idea why every time I go to start my 84 22r truck that you have to "bump" the key several times before it will engage the starter? The starter was replaced over a year ago, the battery cables don't have any corrosion and they are tight. Thank you for all the help in advance!Delano

How many should there be attaching to the body? There should only be one that attaches to the engine correct?

I would ensure that these grounds are clean and tight, next i would look into the starter relay.

He's saying it won't turn over till after a few tries. Pumping the gas won't do anything

Cleaning the Starter Relays contacts helps as well. I will see later if I can find the link showing the contacts. I got it somewhere, just got to find it. I used some fine grit sandpaper to clean the contacts. RAD4Runner has some great info on his build thread as well.

I used a screw driver to work around the edges of the seal to help free the cover.

Occasionally i have to get out and smash the starter with something... I can hear the relay click but no crank on the starter.

You say its a year old, but they do sit near the wheel well, could be a dirty/sticky starter?
