84 4runner, ls1 swap....
I am going to do an ls1 swap into an 84 4runner. I am in the research phase right now. I'm looking to make a list of things that need to be done in a swap and parts that will be needed. Help me make a list!!!
I obviously need an LS1 a new tranny, the T5 (assuming it's a 5spd)
I believe I need some lift for it to fit
fuel deliver system: pump lines regulator etc...
new exhaust that will mate up w/the LS1
Help expand this list and things that need to be done when swapping in a new motor.

good power good gas mileage... It was between the ls1 and a 350. I know the 350's are common, but the fuel economy also isn't too great, although it would be pretty cool to have an old school engine in the truck. I prefer fuel injection to carb and I don't want something that ever feels like it has a lack of power.

Hey good luck on the swap. I’m in the middle of a Buick 231 swap into my 85 4runner. I found a lot of info on Advanced Adapters and Downey Off Road’s website. They will have a good amount information on swaps of all types. I know that a lot of Jeep guy’s have put the LS1 motor in, and most of them had to go to Dana 60s, heavy trans and transfer cases and they still have breakage problems. Tire size has alot to do with also.
By the way what type of wheeling do you do?

As far as wheeling. I pretty much do whatever the situation calls for. lol...
So if they are having a lot of breakage problems then i'm guessing it's just too much torque for the rig and/or the weight of the engine?

why not a 4.3 v6 it would fit a whole lot eazier and way less expensive or if power is the issue a 5.0 with aod is cool i'v seen that done and pretty cool not to hard and the toyota rearend will hold up if you are not to hard on the throttle. (plenty of power)

Why not stop telling him which motor you think would be better and let him do what he wants.
Sorry I can't help you with the swap though. Definitely take lots of pics and what not.

IMO, waste of a motor to put it in such a vehicle.

alrighty then. it's not like I have boughten it yet. So here are the suggestions and ideas so far:
lt1 - cheaper/newer motor/fuel injected plenty of power
2jz-ge not toooo spendy/v6/enough power to do whatever decent efficiency/fuel injected
Chevy 350 - old school carb - not efficient, sufficient power, bad mileage, cheap
Other v6 or v8

22R is a reliable and economical engine.
Upgrade to a 3.4L and gain significant hp but lose your gas mileage.
Heck, put a 4.7L or a 5.7L in it.

with any swap of that nature I'd have to imagine different drive shafts, moved tranny(obviously) and t-case, different universal set-up, and/or double cardon... electrical... springs to handle the weight... If you decide to go ahead with the ls1, be sure to post some pics, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would want to see it, preferably in action

Well basically I want it for all all around vehicle. Something that is capable of some great wheeling (i won't really do sand, but mud/rocks/hills etc...) I want it to have more than enough power. I want it to be able to tow a trailer w/a quad or a couple bikes and also be full of people/gear in the cab part of the 4runner and still be able to make it up freeway hills at speed w/out having to floor the damn thing the whole time and feeling like oh am I going to make it up w/speed.
As far as gas mileage, I don't care if i get about 17-18 or so w a little gear and a couple people in the truck. I'm not looking for something that gets 30, that's for sure.
