84 4runner advice

hey guys just got a 1984 4runner and i love it. Problem is the 22r has no power. Id like to do an engine swap but i think thats too expensive...? Anyway, is it possible to do things to the 22r so that i can go more than 10mph on hills? If not whats a good, cheap, easy engine swap? thanks

A scientific approach to your problem might be advised. Has the truck been modified? Is the gearing correct? Is the engine tuned up? Its it worn out? The 22 isn't a powerhouse, but if its 'right' it should get you where you wanna go just fiiiiiine. Engine 'upgrades' are Xpensive and a lot of trouble.

I properly running 22 is going to a lot better than a modded one in reliability and consistancy. Rebuild yours and make sure that everything is in working order. That will be your safest bet.

You got to have the right gears or the 22R engine will have no power, if your running bigger tires you definatly need to regear. im running 37'' tires with 5.29 gears and its as good or better as stock.

gears might be the only fix worth the money for raw power and torque (re)gains. the cost of all the other mods add up fast, but the real power gains just dont come (until you get a stage 2 + engine from LCE) - you still have a 22RE. a great engine with a little pep.

for real power, i think you need to swap. again plenty of choices for a few to several grand. I want a 1KZ-TE from KN-185.

I have had an 84runner for about 6 months now, experienced the same problem of loss of power on hills as you have, and was forced into doing something about my carb because it crapped out. I ended upswapping the carb for a weber 38 instead of rebuilding. I didn't want the give rebuilding the old carb a try, so replacing became the easier choice for me. The mod was simple, and I can now go over the hills at a constant 55mph, when before I would slow down to 40. I have seen prices between 320 to 450 so shop well. I didn't get an increase power, however maintaing the speed to "respectable" in the slow lane was achieved.

Apparently they do well with a header and exhaust, BTW gears don't 'give' you power, more like letting you access the power properly.

Will the turbo help all that much off-road? Seems like added stress on the engine for not much return.
