4speed to 5speed swap

Who on here has experience with this? My Bandit mini camper has a 4 speed and we think we would like to swap in a 5 speed but I have some questions for some of you yota pros. The Bandit is a 86 built on a long wheel base truck with the six lug upgraded one ton dually rear axle.

I have found a 5 speed trans close to us that shows to be from a one ton 88 year model pickup 165,000 miles. Does anyone know if this would be a direct bolt on swap and if we would need the drive shaft from the five speed to make this work? They also have the drive shaft if needed. 250.00 for the trans and 75.00 for the drive shaft.

Also would just dropping in the 5speed give me a lower top speed RPM or would I need to change out the gearing ratio in the rear end to achieve this? Thanks in advance for any input.

With all the details you gave nobody can tell you anything about anything.

What 4spd is it? How long is it? What 5spd are you looking to get? How long is it?

If they are the same length then the driveshaft you have should work.

Did the truck with the 5spd have the same engine as your truck?

Any engine information from your truck and the possible donor truck?

(sorry Runner, didn't notice you posted engine request also... Lol)

Not sure why I need more than its a one ton 86 long bed with 4speed looking at putting a 5 speed from a 88 one ton. I guess a good question is were all the one ton pickups from 86 to 89 long bed I am assuming probably so? I also assume a long bed would need a longer drive shaft than a short bed? Leading to the question about all one tons being long bed? I guess a good other question is if the 4 speed long bed used the same drive shaft as the 5 speed or is the 5 speed trans a little longer needing a different size drive shaft? I am pretty sure the 5 speed will drop right in to where the 4 speed mounts but am not positive and think I read somewhere in the past that the 5 speed is just a little longer than the 4 speed leading to the need for the different length drive shaft when doing a swap. The 5 speed and drive shaft I have found is a couple hours away so I cant just go out and do some measurements and thought someone here might be able to answer my question just by year models and the fact that they are both one ton. ANYWAY thanks for the input and any more input greatly appreciated!

Yup it will bolt right in. And grab the 5speed driveshaft and it will bolt in. Gear shifters will be in the exact same spot, all your clutch components will be the same, bell housings will be identical, gear ratios in the rear diff will be exactly the same. Since all Toyota trucks were identical... Good luck bro and be sure to post pics!

Yes I am being a smart butt... It's just in fun. All the info that we can get is more helpful to us to help you. Toyota made several different models of transmissions in various years. Even sometimes in the same year models. Not to mention 2wd & 4wd differences. And since a lot of us have done parts swapping from many different years and drivetrains, we know what to look/ask for. We are only trying to help make your request/swap easier by getting as much info as we can. so don't leave anything out, research Yotatech thoroughly, and we will do our best to assist.

Thanks Rokbok! I thought it was a direct fit swap and thought that I would need the drive shaft from the 5 speed too but was not sure.

I guess you didn't understand....

I dont KNOW if the 5-spd you are looking at will be a direct bolt in ordeal...

We don't have enough information to clarify...

More than likely it will work, but there may have to be some fabrication, we don't know because we don't have dimensions of trannies or exact locations of crossmembers on both trucks, or shifter locations, or whatever. We know they were both 22RE trucks....

You need to research and give us transmission model numbers. I am not familiar with 2wd model numbers, but I presume the 5spd is a "W" series trans. And the 4spd is probably a "L" series? Let's go to Marlins site and find out...

Ok, i am back, Maybe the 5spd is a W55? Production dates might help.

Sorry for my inexperience here. I really thought there would be only one type four speed trans installed in 1986 one ton pickups and only one type 5 speed installed in one tons in 1988. Making it a pretty easy answer whether it is a direct swap or not. I will do more research to find out exactly what I have and what exactly the 5 speed that is available is. I really appreciate the willingness to help!

I am starting to think that the swap might be more trouble than its worth? I ran the truck average around 65 mph running at around 3300 rpm from Cali to Va and varied between 16 to just under 21 mpg. If the five speed would help give a more consistant 20 plus mpg I think it would be worth getting everthing lined out and doing the swap.

The trip out from Va we averaged closer to the 60 mph mark and never hit the 20mpg averaged closer to 16 probably due to i believe the head wind and some way windy storms we went through in Kentucky and Oaklhoma. Anyway thanks again for the willingness to help and when I get EXACTLY what I have and what I am looking at I will post my findings! Peace out
