4Runner Build, Mod, and Tuning

Hey everyone,

Glad to be back on here. Living in Colorado now. Here’s a link to my last build thread on here and looking forward to working on a Yota again and being on the forum. It’s been too long.

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...e-come-164225/

Last week I picked up an 88 4Runner and I know this is the thread for the 1984-1985 Runners but somewhere back they blew the 3.0 in it and ended up putting in a 22RE. It’s also had the IFS swapped out for a solid axle so between the two I feel this is where this build belongs as it fits better with the year for all parts etc now.

I know I’ll be looking for some ideas, opinions, and thoughts going forward as I fine tune. Thanks in advance for your input and feedback.

22RE w/ cold air intake. SAS swap, home made rock sliders, diff armor, u-bolt flip kit, hi-steer conversion, shackle lift for spring over setup. Spool in the rear axle. Bilstein shocks all around. 5spd, brand new Marlin clutch and flywheel. Dual transfer cases for extra low gears for crawling (two OEM t-cases mates together per the previous owner). Rough country 9500 winch. 37” tires with full size spare.

Then what I can’t verify without taking things apart: I was told it has 4.88 gears and Chromoly axles all around.

Seems to run good other than a ticking that may be a small exhaust leak. Heater or air flow needs work as it’s always blowing a little hot and something feels off about the blower. Power windows work but need some work as well as most wiring through the truck. Body needs some work as it’s starting to rust through at the edges in a few spots.

So far I’ve got it home, checked fluids, greased the zerks in the suspension and drive lines that weren’t broken off (still need to replace the others), swapped the battery and main battery terminals, started adding recovery gear to it, and took it out on a test crawl. Dual t-cases worked great and are so much better than a normal clutch.

Here’s a link to our recent outing a friend put up.
