22r exaust manifold vs. 22re exaust manifold
are the stock heads on the 22re bigger or wider than the stock exaust headers on the 22r? i could possible gram them from my brothers 4runner and put them on mine if its worth it

The only difference I know of is the shape of the exhaust ports, but I think I read that if you use the older style gasket everything will bolt up just fine... Since the parts are donors you should try it and let us know!!!

there are no differences between 22R and 22R-E ports as long as they're of the same generation(e.g., 81-84, or '85-95).
the manifolds may themselves be different, as most 22R-E engines had an O2 sensor on them.

No, the 87 manifold should fit the 85.
The block/head change was 8/84. Late 84 and up are the same block and head, 22R or 2RE.

yea im sure it will fit. the only thing is will it make a difference? different shape and/or wider pipes? thats a lot of work to just replace it with the exact same thing.

Did you ever change exhaust amnifolds?
I have a '94 "Truck" that seems to be getting noisier & noisier at manifold....thinking a header....I hear that exaust bolts are always coming loose. Would you agree about looseness?
Do you think the return pipe for EGR is also problematic as far as looseness?

what return pipe? on a '94, the pipe on the manifold is the air injection system. the EGR is internal.
you've probably just got a plain old exhaust leak. yes, the studs often loosen up, break, or the nuts come off. personally, i like to use a remflex exhaust gasket, and ditch the factory nuts for a plate washer, lock washer, and a regular nut. i've never had problems with leaks or loosening up with this setup. the remflex gaskets are so thick that they can seal a warped/pitted flange in most cases. of course it comes at a price, about $25 for an '85-95 22R/22R-E, but i think the factory gasket actually might cost more.

i think that on the late engines, the only real difference in exhaust manifolds was that some(mostly before the 90s) had the O2 sensor mounted on the manifold. my '91 just has an untapped boss, my O2 sensor is located down by the cat.

So I'm struggling to determine what kind of exhaust manifold I have because of the O2 sensors. I purchased the correct O2 sensor for my year vehicle, however, the Denso O2 doesn't fit into the manifold. and now that I'm thinking about it, the sticker on the valve cover is a 22R sticker, so I'm wondering if the previous owner mix and matched parts when rebuilding the engine. Anyone pictures or more information surrounding manifolds & the O2 sensor holes specifically?

if you need help call Jerry at 22re performance, he is very helpful and a wealth of knowledge. He helped me several times when I was having issues identifying stuff on my rig. Over the years these things get molested so much it can be difficult. He even had me send him some pics to help me identify stuff.
also.. the obvious.. a 22r has a carb... 22re is efi.

So I did talk to him last week actually. We believe that the exhaust mani is an aftermarket reproduction. So bottom line, i threw my old O2 in there, passed emissions like a champ and won't worry about it until way down the line.
tracking difference between 22R & 22RE. There were some 22Rs with O2... super rare apparently.
