22r cam timing question
We suspect the cam timing is off a tooth on a 1984 22R. Is it possible to pull the cam gear off the shaft without taking the gear off the crank?
The idea is to pull the cam gear off the shaft, correct the valve timing by moving the cam inside the chain, then putting the cam gear back on.

all you have to do is pull the valve cover, take the came gear bolt out, and use a long screwdriver or prybar and stick it down the passenger side of the chain and pry gently on the tensioner to get enough slack to pull the cam gear out then spin the sprocket which ever way you need. getting the cam/distributer gear back on the cam is a bit tricky but just wiggle it and work it back on then release the tensioner. walla. had to do the same on my 22re after my rebuild. oooppps? took us 20 or 30 minutes tops.

Thanks!
Thank you both. We'll give it a shot.
Was able to slip the cam off, rotate, and put it back on with relative ease. The owner turned the crank a little for me while I held the camgear up so the woodruff key would line up again in the new, correct location. We didn't have to push back the tensioner, I could get enough simply by levering the cam gear up. The truck now runs better and we were able to set the timing right.

does anyone know how to retime the cam correctly if the colored link is not lined up? in otherwords, is there a way to find #1 TDC based on the valve or cam position? my 20r is way off and there must be a way to do this without taking the timing cover off. right?

Pull the first spark plug and stick your thumb over the whole to seal it. Turn the crank, you should feel pressure against your finger. When the pressure stops and it starts to have a sucking feeling on your finger then back it off and use a flashlight and look thru the hole. Make sure the piston is visable and you should have TDC.
