1st Gen 22R rebuild
After pulling the head and finding the flat cam I looked at the block in the truck the next morning and lone and behold there was a nice scratch in the 3 cylinder. Sooo I decided to pull the motor and do a full rebuild. Here are some pics of the progress..

The last paint work and cleaning is the head. I'm gonna start on that this week and paint it the olive color as well. My next posting will be about post machine shop work. Stay tuned!

I talked to the machine shop several times throughout the machining process and decided on a .020 overbore and align hone the mains. They also skimmed the top of the block .008. Upon inspection of the crank they grinded the main and rod journals .010 under, installed ARP rod bolts, new pin bushings, and resized the big end of the rods. After that they balanced the rotating assembly. I decided to go with Lcengineering hypereutectic pistons.

I'm going with ARP head bolts and main studs. One night I decided to go ahead and screw in the main studs and check this out..
So I called ARP and they would ship me a new stud for free. I got the package within the week and... well it was a stud alright... one for a Mitsubishi! So that small setback continues as I have to wait till tomorrow to call them again. I also ordered the wrong main bearings. I have the 81-82 22R since bottom bearing caps have a offset location tab not a centered one.. oops my bad.. So this is where I am till this point.

I do love a clean naked engine.
When I replace my 22R engine about a year and a half ago, I bought it already done; a long block rebuild (stage 2). If I had another need to do an engine replacement, I would do what your doing. I'd tear it down myself, give it to the machine shop for them to do their thing and assemble it myself.

It's been a very fun experience so far. Thankfully I've been able to take my time and do things properly (at least I hope I am) Once I get my single ARP main stud and the right bearings the assembly begins!

I beleive that. Even though I bought my eingine as a long block, it was enjoyable stipping it down of the stuff I needed to transfer over.
Suprisingly my engine (22R) was not that difficult to remove. With hindsight being 20/20, the first thing I should removed was the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Those three bolts would have held up the whole engine removal process.
