1989 pickup payload
Wanted some opinions. I got this truck as a toy hauler.
Its an 89 pickup 2wd manual. Was planning on loading the bed with a quad (380lbs) and attaching a dirt bike hitch for my dirt bike (250lbs).
think this is a good idea or bad.
with both machines I’d be driving 150mi one way, then back the next afternoon.
mostly on long flat highways.

First, I think that you have 1/2 ton P/U. So a 380 lbs. quad is no trouble. The 250 lbs. dirt bike wouldn't put it over, but with it on a hitch, the actual weight on the truck is much less. Towing it shouldn't be much trouble at all, those engines are stronger than you might think. Just watch the temp gauge. Sometimes long, or relatively steep, hills can get it a bit warm. Check the oil and water before you leave, and you'll be GTG.
Really, you're looking at 1/2 the truck's rated payload. Yeah, it's 30 years old, but as long as it's in decent shape, no problem. I've been somewhat remiss (ahem) in keeping up my maintenance, but my '87 pickup, 2WD, 5 speed manual, 22R, is strong as ever, once it get's warmed up. I recently took a roughly 450 lbs generator to my mechanic to work on, and up hills, level, whatever, it just kept on truckin I didn't really notice it was sitting the bed as I drove. It was up as far forward as I could get it, and the truck drove perfectly normally.
Good luck to ya!
