1987 Turbo
How rare are these cars?
My friend has one (sr5 turbo sunroof) and is about to 'retire' it to the government for $1500! It's sitting in my front yard right now and I'm trying to save it from getting crushed and am trying to convince everybody to go about this humanely!
Is there any sort of demand for this car...? Should I get him to sell it or part it out? I know other car models that have turbo editions were always in short supply.
If anything is it worth buying from him for myself to save it for a future project or are enough of them around for me to find one later?
I generally only see 1 at a time on ebay, and there are none listed in the counties around me on craigslist
thanks for the help

YES, turbo 4Runners are rare, available for 2 years to compete with Nissan's new "hardbody" trucks that had a V-6 option, while toyota's 3.slo was not ready for US import.
the turbos had a unique upholstery option, unique digital gauge cluster, plus some heavier duty mechanicals. it'd be a shame to discard or crush the vehicle.
from wikipedia's entry on 4Runners:
A turbocharged version of the 22R-E engine (the 22R-TE) was also introduced in 1986, although this engine is significantly rarer than the base 22R-E. It appears that all turbocharged 4Runner models sold in the US were equipped with an automatic transmission, though a five-speed manual could still be ordered in the turbocharged pickups. Most Turbo 4Runners were equipped with the SR5 package, and all turbo trucks had as standard a heavier rear differential. Low-option models had a small light in the gauge cluster to indicate turbo boost, while more plush vehicles were equipped with an all-digital gauge cluster that included a boost gauge. Turbocharged and naturally aspirated diesel engines were also available in the pickups at this time as well, but it appears that no diesel-powered 4Runners were imported to the United States.

Holy Moly! Don't let it go to the junk yard! Thats a sad sad story. You can easily get $1,500 out of parting the truck, seen the motors non-running sell for $1,200, Very rare hard to get in good shape. Just bought 87' 4runner 22rte non-running for $900 (Head and Head gasket issues). Definitley a keeper or money maker. Good Luck

It is a quite a bit of labor for a head gasket but well worth it. Mine has super low miles on it, was a carpenters truck that had no mechanic skills. Either way whether you fix, fix and sell, just sell, or part you stand to make more money than giving it to a junk yard and you get to keep a toyota on the road. My sis is in LA I might even be interested in a road trip to purchase off ya. Got any pics?

if it parts out, that means I'll be buying it from him and then parting it out. Small gamble at $1500 but hey hopefully I'll make some extra and be able to keep other cars on the road.
and tiyoda87 this one only has 113XXX on the clock. according to my friend who purchased it less than a year ago, it was a 1 owner car at that point. Its def not in super great shape, but I'll post some pictures soon.

Dude, don't let that get away!! Those things are super rare, especially if it is an x-tra cab pickup with the manual R151F 5-speed transmission. (4runners only came in auto) I could be worth a pretty penny $$!
PICTURES!!! Please?

OH I see I thought your buddy would give you a better price. Ya don't let it go to the scrapper if your looking for a future project thats definitley a good one to get into especially if it just needs some head gasket work. I am actually on another forum and just found out that the 22rte heads are actually prone to cracking..lame. Seems like these things are just notorious for head problems.

Heck, if anyone wants to meet the price the government will give him it will be gone in a day!

The r151f utilizes larger bearings--> therefore STRONGER
Also it has lower gear rations and a 23 spline gear driven case as opposed to the 21 spline found on non turbos.
^ that makes it very desireable to hardcore wheelers, theyre a high ticket item. Hopefully ill find one someday to swap.

Ahhh I see Thanks for the reply been trying to figure what the demand was all about with r151f I thought toyota trannies were relatively pretty similar... learn something new everyday. Happy Turkey Day
