1985 4x4 22r Front Axle Leakage

Hey All,

New to the forum and trying to fix up my truck that has been in the family for awhile. I got some leakage on my front axles. I've been shopping around town to get the work done, since I don't have the space or tools to do it myself. But I'm getting quotes all over the place from $400-$600 (seals only) and then all the way up to $2700-$4500 (trunnion reseal). Trying to get some insight into this so I don't get taken advantage of.

It's a very laborious job but idk about 2700.......
I did it myself and spent some time on it. I even swapped front and rear differentials because I wasn't in love with daily driving a lunch box locker in the rear around town.

There's an 8 part video series on YouTube by low range and a thread on this forum: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f115...ctures-180536/

Good luck with the direction you take it!

Parts cheap, labor expensive.

Buy some tools. Suffer, Learn something.

You can make space somewhere.

Taken advantage of??? Only if you submit.

Is this a second vehicle that can sit for a few days while you work on it in the evenings? Space really shouldn't be an issue. From what I've gathered, it doesn't take anything in the way of special tools. There's write ups and videos all over the net going over how to do it. You'll save a pile of money if you do the job yourself. If it's a primary vehicle and you need it every day, you're better off paying someone else to do it. From the looks of it, you need more than just some seals. You're going to want to do, or have someone else do, the complete outers, seals, wipers, bearings and all. My understanding is this is the kit to get. Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

The front axle service kit from Marlin is $195 and is what I would recommend using. It supplies all Koyo (OEM) bearings and quality seals and gaskets. It's what I used with the exception of using the TG Trail Safe knuckle ball seals. The TG seals are overkill though and certainly not required. The stock style knuckle seals supplied with the Marlin kit are fine.

Where about are you located? I could help out if you're close. Both sides should be an afternoon job at best or maybe up to a full Saturday if some stuff is stubborn.
