1984 Toyota Pickup 2wd rear wheel bearing replaced...still have noise?

Hi there,

I've been lurking these helpful forums for about a month and need some help/advice.

My 1984 Toyota Pickup 2WD had what sounded like a right rear wheel bearing sound when driving. At about 35 -45mph it was most noticable (womp womp womp). From all the research I did it certainly appeared to be a wheel bearing issue. I removed the axle shaft and ordered all the parts I needed from Toyota and replaced the axel seal while I was there. I took the shaft to a machine shop and had them press out the old bearings and press in the new bearing.

After reinstalling the axle shaft the sound is about 90% better. However, I'm still getting a slight womp womp sound. Given I had a professional machine shop press in the bearings and do everything properly I was surprised to still hear something. Any ideas as to what could possibly improve the sound with the new bearing replacement but still have that same similar sound but less? I swapped the rear tires to ensure it wasn't tire noise. I also recently had the brakes replaced and drums machined. Again, the sound is very similar to what it was previously it's just much less dramatic after the bearing replacement.

My assumptions are:
1. Brake noise (not sure how).
2. Loose hub/race? Would have assumed the machine shop would have called this out given they had it all apart and repainted.
3. Something in the diff? It appears to be coming from the right, however.

Any help or ideas here would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Did you replace one or both? Could be the other side if you just did the one. Could be a tire too. I went through something similar on another vehicle and found a big blob of tar on the inner part of a back tire that made just that sound.

Yes, just one side. The noise is very clearly coming from the right rear. Verified this by having someone ride in the bed down a back road and lean over the side to listen.

Tire shop claims the tire seems good. I got a second opinion and the new shop claimed the tire had a bit of a wobble (this was prior to replacing the bearing). My assumption at this point is a tire, warped wheel drum. If anybody can think of something else. Just surprising given I just had the brake done and drums machined.
