Won't start Carb Issues? 1982 22R
My 1982 22r is really tough to start if it has sat a few days. Once you start it, it will start the rest of the day. It sounds like it is not getting gas, but the fuel filter which is near the carb is full. I spray starter fluid in it and it starts and then idles and runs fine. The other thing is if you romp on the gas it bogs down and then revs? Is this the carb, need adjusting, rebuild? This truck used to start fine before I moved and it sat for 8 months without being started. The battery is good and starter works.

There should be fuel visible in the window. Check it with the truck running and you'll prob see it there. To me, this says that your bowl leaks fuel, probably very slow, so while running there is no prob. As for the choke, I don't know what the temp is where you are, but at cold start in the morning, you can pull the air cleaner lid and look in there, the choke plate should be mostly closed. Ya I checked my "gas window" and there is a tiny bit of fuel in the bottom, but not hardly any. When I step on the gas with the truck turned off, shouldn't gas fill the window up? It does not. I bought a rebuild kit and will tear the carb apart this weekend.

Sounds like the acceleration pump is not working. When you step on the throttle it squirts gas into the carburetor. This keeps the mixture from getting too lean when you push on the throttle. It also gives it a little extra gas to prime it before you start it. Look down the throat of the carburetor and twist the throttle. If the acceleration pump is working then you will see some gas squirt in there. It will be best to just rebuild the carburetor since things are not working properly on it.
The window will not fill up with gas when the truck is turned off. The fuel in the window is in the float bowl, which is filled by the fuel pump.

Like supernerd said, the float bowl won't fill when you press the gas, it's filled by the fuel pump which for us mechanical pump guys means the engine needs to be running. Still though, you need fuel in that bowl, which is where the fuel squirt from the accelerator pump comes from. I really think that your extra cranks put more fuel into the bowl and then your truck starts. I guess it's time to rebuild the carb and see if new gaskets fix it. Take care to get your float level right, I think I had to bend my little tab a few times, once too much, then too little, then finally just right.
