Transfer case issue

First off I got to take my transfer case off for the frist time. didnt do it by the manual as in take the whole transmission off. well I took it off and it wouldnt come off I had it in neutral. So I popped it into 4h and it fell right off. I got a transfer case from the junkyard for 75., and It is setup for the shifter to go right in the top, well mine is setup were the shifting rods are out like 5 inchs from the transfer case. only differance from the 2 is the front drive shaft is a circle instead of a square. Im waiting on another transfer case a 85 to see if that one matches, ok the funny thing this is all being done to have a working speedometer cause mine will eat the gear not spin it. any suggestions on the year of the transfer case?
