tranny problems

hello everybody, last weekend after having a lot of help putting a new clutch in my 22r 81 pickup (first time and the tranny weighs a lot) and after putting it back together, i had hoped the grinding problem with the truck was fixed. it made a growling noise from first through third and reverse and i thought it was the throw out bearing. after having a new bearing and clutch it still made the noise. i have read that trannys 1983 and older (the l50 and l52 trannys) have problems with the input shaft bearing breaking and ruining the tranny because of poor lubrication in the bearing and being undersized. i was wondering if anybody else has had these problems and if a g52, g54 or w56 tranny from newer 80s yotas would swap right in. i hear the input shaft bearing is larger in these trannys and they are stronger overall. help is greatly appreciated.

The input shaft bearing is the problem. I had to rebuild the tranny in my 82 for that reason. I got the rebuild kit from Marlin Crawler and it works great. I have yet to see a 79-83 pickup that hasn't had tranny problems. Also my 5th gear was bad but the kit comes with all of them including the syncros.

Hey,

I would just suggest rebuilding the tranny. almost all the things that could be the cause of this problem would be fixed when you rebuild the tranny, synchros, main bearing etc...

hope that helps,

Jon

yeah i was thinking about buying a rebuild kit from marlin crawler but you need bearing pullers and other special tools to do it and ive never rebuilt a tranny. there is so many gears im kind of scared to try it. how difficult is it to rebuild correctly?

Its not too bad. Get yourself a good manual for it and follow that. The part about the pullers I had to make a few special things to get some of the stuff out but its pretty straightforward. I've acctaully replaced my front bearing twice because I sunk my beast one time and got water in the tranny and killed it after I had replaced the bearing once. The tranny has been working well for over a year now since I rebuilt it. My dad and I did it in a weekend but we took our time and made sure everything was really clean and all and took our time. It could be done faster but theres no need. Its not fun to take out so its best to take the time and do it right the first time.

I just got an FSM off of ebay for the '81. I can't scan stuff but I would be willing to make copies of info and mail them to you if you need some info. Just PM or email me.

How about this, here is an FSM on ebay for $65...about $20 cheaper than I paid for mine last week...
I think it would be worth it for you in the long run...
