top speed ?

Ok, I might(probably) be beating a dead horse, but I couldn't find a thread a thread pertaining to this. Stupid search. Anyway, what's your top speed on these trucks? I took mine to Laramie Wy from Fort Collins, co. A gain of 2000 feet in 60 miles. After a while I was in third gear going up hills. Max speed of 40-45 at times. I'm running 31" tires, a 22r with a comp cam. Stock other than that. Am I running slow? I think so.

I got 85 mph going up the I5 Grapevine north of Castaic California (unsure of elevation change) - 7MGE P&P w/ 2.5" exh, 32s, 4.56s
Flat highways will get me 100mph before I lose my nerve and the truck starts shaking (never did rebalance my used wheels/tires), but I don't think she'd go much faster than 105/110 anyway

wait, this was with 30x9.50x15..... sorry.

I wonder if he's looking for 1st gen....22R...which may be why it's posted here in this section. Don't think you can compare those other engines....

Going over a pass, depending on the pass, I will be stuck at 3rd gear and 45-50mph. Other passes I can actually keep it in 4th or 5th and go 65, but I expect 4th gear 50-60mph on passes, and I'm not surprised (just a little annoyed) when I sometimes have to drop it down to 3rd.

When I was coming back from Salt Lake I decided I'd get my truck up over it's year...83..I got it to 85mph after a flat stretch that ended in a slight downhill. Engine was getting pretty loud at that point, but the ride was still smooth.

Mines a rebuilt 22R (basically a stock rebuild) with 30x9.50 tires.

They aren't fast

Yeah, this was driving the truck in my sig, 83, 22r, on 31s. I know they won't go all that fast, but I'd expect 65-70 wouldn't be out of the question. you'd think they'd build in a little added capacity for those uphills and headwinds, etc. the drive was slightly uphill for about an hour if you're doing the speed limit. I've had a bit of trouble with my engine so i guess I'm still getting those worked out. And sorry about reliving an old dead thread but i couldn't seem to find it this time around

I think it's funny when people reply to a thread like this not realizing the OP was referring to a 1st Gen..

Any way, my '81 with stock 3.90's, 33's and a decent running 22R can actually use 5th gear on the flat stretches will do 65-70, though with out a steering stablizer I don't that often. Cool thing is that DD'ing it the last couple of weeks I am getting about 18-19 mpg which really suprises me...and yes I use a GPS to track the actual odometer due to the fact the stock is off...

Gearing makes all the difference. Trips to Tahoe on 33's used to be strictly a 3rd-gear affair. Now it will do 65-70 happily all day long, as long as the elevation isn't too high or the hills too steep.

I have a fresh hybrid build in my 80' and 32"s and I can peg the speedo on flat surface now. With stock 20r it came with, I was lucky to hit 65-70, with the 22r I could prolly get 80-85 downhill, depends how fast the person who is doing all the pushing is going.

20r with 4.37 gears on 31x10.5 I can max my speedo at 140km/h in 4th doing like 5500rpm on flat, I really dont touch 5th. I dont like doing that its too scary and it feels like i cant steer.

ive had mine to 100mph.....slight downhill, close to that on flat. most big hills i can keep in 4th, as long as i stay in my power band. i have a '79 with a 22r and a 5 speed and 4.38 gears with 31's. the 4.38's are so much better with the tire size than 4.11's

Who cant use 5th on flat freeway? something must be wrong?

I have never tried to do top speed in my truck, I could not care less. ive had it to 70 on thr freeway in 5th. 31x10.5 m/t.

my old 95 22re has been thru the rockys a few times, fully loaded, and had to go 20-25mph on the steepest sections. 2nd gear. haha.
that was with 31 a/t.

thanks guys. the only reason I ask is because I've only had mine to about 70, and lately it's been much less. I was kind of thinking maybe they're just not made to go that fast, being over twenty years old and all. I guess I've got more work to do to get it running right

Mine was pretty slow, probably similar to yours, until my engine rebuild. I got a slightly-performance cam, otherwise basically stock, and my carb (other than a couple weird issues) is working well. I've got smaller tires. Timing at around 8. But really, mine isn't much faster than yours. I keep hearing again and again that the biggest power gain for these trucks comes from a header. Hopefully I'll find out before too long..

I got a new header and exhaust (no cat) on mine and haven't notice an huge diff. My biggest gain was getting 4.88's. Gearing is where it's at! Elevation and a 4 cyl is our prob in CO. BTW 4.88's with 33's and your speedo is almost right on.
