screwed and tattoed
talk about some crazy ...i was driving to get my new exhaust today...doin about 50 down the highway...all the sudden i felt a fairly strong vibration coming from the transfer case and tranny....then all the sudden.....BOOM!!! front driveshaft blowed in half ...busted my t-case in half ...put a big hole in my tranny ....a part of either the driveshaft or the t-case hit an oncoming car as they passed me....almost flipped the truck as i ran off the road...so i figured i would share this with yall

Holy , that sucks
still am curious how the bad u-joints in a front driveshaft, that shouldn't have been spinning, could have caused that,
how bad was the car that got hit by the flying yota bits?

i often go wheeling..and i dont like having to get out and lock my hubs...so i leave them locked all the time...(i was told by 4craweler or wab fab one that it is alright to leave them locked...as long as im not in 4wd...if the hubs are locked..then the front d-shaft will be spinning...duh..lol...j/k...i do believe the other car is ok..they pulled over...then just kept on driving..yeah thats half a deer leg in the back..lol..the remains of my special hunt...buck only...why would i be driving in 4WD down the road...going 50 MPH!!!!....thats f-in insane...unless u got a newer t-case...it will F@#$ these old ones up in a heartbeat...lol...well....if anybody has a tranny, t-case, or front driveshaft, in good condition...im now in search of alot of parts...lol..i already have another 4spd from Redvette...but we dont know if it works or not...so i would like to have a 5-spd...need a new shifter assembly looks like too....this would be a good time to replace the rear main...the clutch...all that jazz...lol

that sucks big time! Especially since you were just working on your front brakes a few days ago. If you were around the Portland, Oregon area they come up on Craigslist all the time. I got a great deal on a transfer case and extra front drive shaft cheap. You will be surprise how damage sometimes takes a while to show up just due to stress, something small transpires into something major....I ignored a thunking sound once in my old '84, turned out I tore a tooth off my pinion gear..a month later the rest of the ring gear let go. Got lucky, found a 5.29 third w/ lockright at the boneyard...
If you end up finding a transfer case that you aren't sure about you might find this video on disassembly cool:
t-case: http://www.trail-gear.com/videos/toy-tcase.wmv
Dual case: http://www.trail-gear.com/videos/toydualcase.wmv
Edit: I wonder if your driveshaft letting go had anything to do with this vibration you mentioned a couple of weeks ago in this thread:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114/vibrations-132659/ The mounts you mentioned being bad could definately have contributed to a transfer case eventually committing suicide IMO..

Holy crap you get the drive train carnage of the year with that one! Your transfer case looks like a stalactite growing under your truck. When's the last time you checked the oil level in it?

some one needs to invent a "quick disconnect driveshaft" or something for those of you that like to run around with the hubs locked, I'm not knocking you guys or anything, I understand the reasoning, but to me it just seems like laziness, how hard is it to pull over and lock 'em when you need 'em?
sorry about your truck man, I love 1st gens they look really nice when done right,
like said above, look on craigslist and what not, you should be able to find stuff locally for cheap, at least in the NW you can anyways, I've seen guys asking less than $100 for t-cases, and less than $250 for tranny's,
glad your friend is okay, I put my knee through a glove box once before, didn't feel very good
