Problem starting my 83

Hello all, new here, first post.
I just bought this truck. It has a 22r in it and what I believe is the stock carb. Here is my morning starting routine (and problem):

3-4 pumps and turn key- truck turns over but doesnt run.

Repeat 2-4 times.

Truck starts and runs for 4-5 seconds, then dies.

On the next start the truck will usually start, and stay running if i keep the throttle down, and after a while will idle (roughly) on its own.

Not sure if its the carb, but I tried using carb cleaner, as it looked like there was blowby oil baked in the carb itself, and while doing this it looked as if only one of the butterfly valves is open, the other just stays partially open. Any ideas as to what im dealing with here? Thoughts and info are greatly appreciated.

One of the butterfly's staying almost closed is normal. It will open when you accelerate hard. What your describing is usually IMO what happens when the choke doesen't work. Try this:

The next time you go to start it, pop off the air cleaner lid and look at the plates. Pump the gas, they both should be closed. If they are not both closed, chances are you have a choke issue. Does the engine fast idle? From what you say probably not.

Let me know how that test turns out.

Sounds like your mixture is a bit lean when starting, like your choke isn't working. If the truck runs when you pump the gas or hold down the throttle, it's probably the choke. I'm guessing it's an electric choke, in which case check that the wires haven't frayed, the plugs are clean and the fuses haven't gone out. If that doesn't help you may need to pick up a new choke or a whole new carb. (Check on craigslist they're like 15-20$)

Sorry it took so long, works been crazy busy. Anyways I checked and both plates did not close, so that must narrow it down to the choke. Now what do it do with it? If I just rebuild the carb will that take care of it, or am I looking at just going with a whole different carb? Thanks fellas

Rebuilding the carb is always a good idea. Just make sure you spend the $$$ and get a good kit, like one from Napa. The cheaper kits are worthless.

Your choke problem could be as simple as cleaning some linkage parts. After many years of heat cycles, the bi-metallic choke spring gets weak and no longer closes the choke when cold.
