New or Rebuilt Engine Advice

I have got an 81 22R 4x4 Toyota that leaks oil like crazy. My dad owned it since it was brand new and handed it off to me about 3 years ago. He did mention to me that the front main seal cracked many years ago and it was never fixed, he would just add oil. Well, it got worse and I thought only the front main seal was also bad and leaking. I started using straight 30 or 40 weight oil so it leaked more slowly and replaced the fill plug and gasket to prevent leaks there.

Anyhow, I took it to a repair shop and he ran a test and he mentioned the engine leaked in 9 different places. He said that even if he repaired the front and rear seals it would run 1000-1200 bucks and he figured 20-30% of the leaking would still exist. The problem gets worse every time I change the oil as well.

What should I do? I have no idea what buying a new engine or rebuilding the existing one would cost. Any input or advice would be appreciated. I live in Salem, OR so if anyone knows of reputable places that know Toyotas in the area I can go to for advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. Interesting to think the guy at the shop was exaggerating to me like he did. I went out and took a look under the rig today and visually the leak is real bad in one place. It seems to be coming from somewhere directly above the oil drain plug. At first I thought maybe the plug itself was leaking but it is coming down to a point just to the left of the drain plug(if looking from the rear) and dripping there. At that spot, there seems to be a plate of some sort over the engine itself further to the left. Just wondering what part of the engine specifically is causing this.

If I can figure out how to do it, I will attach a photo.

If it's leaking that bad I would say your PCV system is not operating properly and letting excess pressure build up in the crankcase making the oil leaks you see. You probably have some bad seals, but also check the PCV system.
