New owner and first post here also. I just purchased a 79' with the stock Aisan carb. I rebuilt it for a cost of $26.42 for the kit. I also got rid of all the emission crap along with a mile of vacuum lines. It runs out perfect.

I picked up the kit from local auto parts dealer named Sigg's auto parts. Once you take carb off you'll be able to see better what to eliminate. You will be able to get rid of a whole manifold of metal tubing attached to carb. once you trace things down you will see what is needed and what is emission crap. Just make sure to keep one line going to your vacuum advance at the distributor. Also I was able to mash closed 2 inlets to the air cleaner assembly. You will have to plug off the metal tube running from the exhaust manifold around behind head and to the smog pump. You will notice amore responsive and easier to start truck, at least I did. You will probably have to tweak the carb due to the greater intake vacuum. I haven't done this yet, but it is sucking fuel due to the greater draw, but runs fine.

another question...this is what my header looks like...

why does one of the tubes have the extra piece that comes up and is open? the tube with the flange is closed off. The engine runs fine, but is this correct?

will a trans that is from a 22re (W56 or G58) work behind a 22R? I'm looking to get a trans that will work with my top shift t case. I was looking to get a L50 or L52 5 speed but i've heard these are weaker than my factory 4 speed and they are not easy to come by. All i want to do is get the best 5 speed trans that will work with a 22R and work with a top shift t case. I've got 4x4 wires FAQ page bookmarked to base my research there. I've checked car-part.com and they have a few, but some don't distinguish between 22R and 22RE.
thanks

thanks for the info...how did you know what to remove smog wise and still be good to go? just pull the hose and if fit stays running keep it off? or just trial and error. i know some of the lines will have to stay, but i don't want my milage and fuel mixture to be messed up.
thanks

yea thats pretty much it. remember though that if you just pull it with out plugging it it will still be pulling vacuum. you got to plug it to see how it will run. i used RTV.

I just did the rebuild on my factory aisan carb. Naturally, I'm having some problems tuning it. The engine sounds 100% better when revving it up, other than slightly bogged at first. Too much fuel? Also, its back firing now when coming down off of high rev and when it comes down from high rev it either dies or runs rough. No trouble starting either. Does any of this sound like a recognizable fix? any help is appreciated.

ok...i've looked at some other engine pics and it seems that i am missing the hose that connects the open port in my header and connects to the air intake. what kind of hose do i need to use? is there a part name for it?

thanks
