new cam, now what?

I put a new cam in my truck, and it's starting real slow. I adjusted the carb until I couldn't see straight. I'm just wondering if the carb needs new jets in it?

Sounds like you have the valve lash set too tight. IF the valves are too tight it makes the truck REALLY hard to start. Adjust your valve on that new cam to .007 on the intake side, .011 exhaust side. Check your FSM or repair manual for the correct routine to set the valves and you will be all set. Also, when you set the timing to 0 deg BTDC, take the distributor cap off and make sure your rotor button is pointed at the #1 wire spot. You COULD also be a tooth off. Im willing to bet it's one of the two.

hmmm, I set the lash according to the fsm, and we fussed over the distributor timing for quite awhile to make sure it's right. That's why I was wondering about new jets

What exactly do you mean by starting slow? Taking a while to fire, or actually turning slow, or what?

If you are 100% positive you have the valves set right, then it's most likely the timing. Sound like you are 1 or 2 teeth off. Is it starting at all or just turning over?

It's turning over fine, I mean it's got the electrical power to spin the motor quickly. It just seems to me to take a while to actually fire. I KNOW the timing is set correctly. I used a light to set it, and it runs well. It just seems to start slowly. Maybe I need to figure out how to make it start better i.e. choking, pumping the gas etc. I just thought that maybe with a new cam you had to feed it additional fuel

That's pretty odd considering all you did was change the cam. What size cam did you install?

I don't know much at all about cams so I'll just try to re-create the information I got with it but it's a comp cam for all that's worth
intake exhaust
valve adjustment .010 .010 *
gross valve lift .440 .440
cam lobe lift .2950 .2950
adv. dur. @ .010 valve lift 263 263

valve timing @.050 open close
intake 1-btdc 44 abdc
exhaust 44 bbdc 1 atdc

these spcs are for cam installed @ 110.0 intake center line exhaust center line @ 110.0
intake exhaust
duration @ .050 222 222
That's the whole sheet and i just now noticed the valve adjustment so I'll have to redo that but other than the before and after top and bottom dead center, it's basically greek to me Thanks for all your help
