it depends on the tires and the driver. mostly the driver. but the tires have a lot to do with it too. the search feature also is a GREAT idea, lots of stuff bout mud here

They do really good in mud, but don't expect them to throw mud like a full size.

You should really start putting more information in your posts it would help everyone give you more advice...what other truck are you talking about besides the 84-89 trucks?? and just fyi the 89 is totally different than the 84-88 pickups, its in the 3rd generation with 89-95 pickups

79-83's do GREAT in the mud...so i imagine an 84-85 would too....straight axle for mud as lift kits for IFS are high dollar...i can get a 4in. lift for my truck for around $280 or $380....easy to run BIG tires..which is a must in mud..i only have 31"x10.50"x15's....and my '80 does GREAT...WAYYYYY better than the '97 f-150 with a 4in lift and 33x12.50's...and mine is completely stock on 31's..his has a rebuilt motor..its an auto...mines a 4spd..and if he can get there in 4wd then i can get there in 2wd...of course i do have Super Swamper TSL's and he only has maxxis mudders...when in 4wd...i can go WAY moer places than he ever even thought about goin...even through 4ft deep mudholes...(only made it halfway through cuz of the water in my exhaust...thats why im going to run STACKS behind the cab)..if you could..get a 79-83...they are soo much easier to work on..or so i've heard...everything i've did to mine i could have done by myself (tranny and t-case swap...new intake...carb got cleaned by a family friend (and it didnt help with the truck running good or not)...if i had the bender..and the tubing..then i could do my exhaust)...anyways...to end this loong post....get a straight axle truck...because if you get ifs and you lift it..then you start breaking stuff...you will regret not getting a SFA truck....buttt ifs is better in mud...due to how the suspension is set up...i have only gotten stuck twice (once was because i had a BAD t-case mount...and my 4wd wouldnt engage good for some odd reason) the other is because of the water in my exhaust like stated earlier...and i have been in some HAIRY situations...baddd stuff...and if i had my ways....i could easliy take this truck anywhere...with mods like a 4BT cummins...a 7in lift and maybe even a 2 or 3in body lift..AT LEAST 40" boggers...5.29 gears...full spools front and rear..STRICTLY a trail rig with those full spools..lol..fi your gonna be in mud...depending on your vehicle get super swamper LTB's..they are veryyyyy good in mud...come in odd sizes like 31x11.50 and 33x13.50 and 34x10.50...and like 47x17 i think...my mods will be 4in pro comp lift and 33x13.50 LTB's...and probably 4.88's or 5.29's..

Just remember that with any truck you get, clean your drive train and grease your u joints etc. After any deep water, check your gear boxes....Lockers are a must....lack of maintenance leads to a lot of failures that lead people to think they have a POS.

yes...DEFINATELY check all the fluids after some deep stuff....i didnt check my t-case fluid after i went into that 4ft deep water...and it was contaminated...so yes...check fluids...and make sure you wash it GOOD...i have no back brakes (as of right now) so when i drive my truck...i only stop with the front brakes...and one day after i got done goin muddin...i didnt clean em out...a boyyy...i regret not doin that...like to have scared the piss right of me..almost rearended a BIG dumptruck...after that almost happened...i went to the carwash...
