Installed new water pump, doesn't want to start?

Need help or advice..I installed a new water pump on my 1980 20r 4x4 truck and must have altered the timing because now it doesn't want to start very easy. I can get it running, but only after it sits for a bit. It will run, idle, and rev once running, but as soon as I turn it off it won't start again. When you turn the key it acts like it wants to start, but dies over and over. Is this just the timing being slighty off or more of a carb air/fuel ratio problem. Any advice would be great. Its snowing and I need to get this thing up to the mountains!

If you didn't mess with the fuel lines or carb settings, it shouldn't be there. Got a timing light? check the timing setting. Could be the fuel filter too. Does it miss when it runs? if so, you could have a bad wire, cap or something else. How long did it run and did it stop or did you shut it off? More info is needed.

I checked the timing and the timing is correct. Once it's started and running, it runs and idles great, no miss or hesitation when you give it gas...but when you manual turn it off and try to immediately restart it it wont start. It acts like it wants to right away when turning the key, but repeatedly dies out. after I've let it sit for a while it will then start up and go through the whole process again?

I looked at my truck to see what you might have done accidentally. All I could see was maybe the Vacuum advance on wrong? Check all the vacuum lines for cracks or pinched. Give your engine a good look over and try to look at everything you touched to see if it's right. Did you change the filter?
