Hi how is it going hope everything is good for all well lets go to the point i have look everywhere for info but so far havn't found much, all I know it was the original motor my toyota had its a 21r have read that there is a difrent one is a 21r americn that goes down to 90 hp and another version of 21r japan that is a better one close to 22r has 109 hp I already fix the motor and going to put My mecanic said that is a very good motor and what he told me that and kind of makes sence is that back in days the motor was so good that the pull it out of the market becouse it doesn't help to the company to sell spair parts well thats the only version of it that I have so any info about the performance would be very helpful here is the pic of it hope someone could help me know what kind of motor I have is it the japan or the american something like that thanks:

Strange, I thought the 21R was used in forklifts only. Learn something every day.

There was a fellow at work a couple years back that had a 77 pickup with a 21R. As I recall he said it was a JDM import replacement engine, and that it was mechanically identical to the 20/22R except that it had a smaller bore resulting in a 2.0L displacement instead of 2.2 (20R) or 2.4 (22R).

That's about all I know...

Thanks..... that's what I read also but another thing, the shop that rebuild my motor told me that the cylinder diameter is a little bigger than the 20r could it still be 2.0L ?

From what I understand, the 21r wasnt offered in the us, only Japan. Junkyards sell this motor saying it is an imported 22r from japan with low miles, when the 22r was an american engine! It has a smaller bore, 2.0 liters. I have heard they are just as reliable as a 22r, just less power. Smaller bore would make me think it was a little bit stronger, as the engine wouldnt be putting as much strain on components. I would also think if a company had a good engine, like toyota, they would much rather have happy repeat customers, then pissed customers who had to constanly buy their parts. That is what makes toyota such a good car company.
