ya know, I've had no complaints about the rancho 5k's on my 82. even with my sway bar disconnected, they do just fine for such a high sitting truck. and with a lifetime warranty... I could care less if i have to change them every year to keep them operational.

It's Rancho springs that tend to be murderous, but I haven't seen any in years. I had a set for cheap on my FJ40.

I had Rancho 5k's on my truck, they were WAY too stiff IMO. The soft valved Bilsteins are well worth the extra $. They are head and shoulders above anything else I've had in my truck, both on and off road.

Bilsteins are fantastic, a good-quality shock that you get an exceptional value for the money invested in them. I think what I really meant to say initially is that there's nothing wrong with Rowdy running his Ranchos if they're what he has. Later, he can replace them, or upgrade them, but the last thing I want to be responsible for is subliminally telling a newer boardie that he needs to spring for an immediate upgrade. "Run what ya brung", you know?

To clarify, I'm not trying to advocate Rancho shocks over any other brand out there, they are exceptionally stiff and tend to explode, but for their price point, they're... acceptable. There are certainly worse shocks on the market at that level.

Fantastic opinion. I was in dire need of upgrading my shocks while ranchos "shocktober" sale was going on and I decided to take advantage of it. the PO apparently didnt realize the factory shocks were too short for the longer springs they'd installed and the price of the ranchos was definitely in my budget as a temporary upgrade. the best part is the i can trade them in for their purchase price once I decide to go with the 5125's!

That kind of stuff is what indirectly killed my 40: the web forum was inundated by hardcores, and reading their opinions skewed my plans and I ended up tearing up a perfectly good vehicle out of a sense of inadequacy. When I went over to the Dark Side, I'd made it my mission to say it's cool to run what you have.

I don't disagree with the run what you brung mentality, I drive an 81 that certainly has it's issues. My standpoint is that I've wasted a lot of money over the last 18 years of owning this truck geting the "cheap fix" or the "I can afford that NOW and it might be okay" instead of saving for just a little longer, having a solid long term plan, and getting what I really wanted in the first place.
Plan, research, change plan, budget, research, solidify plan, save, save, stockpile parts, build your dream Yota, enjoy the hell out of it, repeat process. Welcome to the addiction. God help us all.
