Front Main!!!!!!!!!

ok im in the process of replacing the front main seal...it has been simple so far...got everything out...ok let me try to explain it..(bear with me)..i took the pulley off.(harmonic balancer (whatever))...behind that was a seal...(front main i thought)...then behind that...there is ANOTHER seal...what seal is that...and is it stealership item...they only listed the one front main that they gave me...the first seal that i took out is deeper or thicker than the one the dealership gave me....the second one looks to be the same size as the one i got from the dealership...ANY help will be GREATLY appreciated...

hmm... pics would be in order here. As far as I know, there's only one seal in the oil pump behind the harmonic balancer.

Strange, I just did my Front seal, and didnt see this other seal. Behind the oil pump housing is a O ring, is this what you are referring to? Is this a 22r?

from what i have heard, some people will use two thinner seals when the balancer gets a groove worn into it; rather than just buying a sleeve. the idea is to get the lip of the seal to ride on a part of the balancer that is not worn. i would remove that second seal you see, and just use the stock part # seal.. with a sleeve on the balancer if you need it.

Dont use a sleeve, those things blow, almost impossible to get em to stay round. Just meaure where the old seal was riding, and get a thicker or thinner seal. I think they came with 7mm, and I got a 10mm one to do mine, I dint need a thicker one, just got it in case. You just want it to ride on a different spot. Hope this helps.

Just did the one in my 81. Took out the factory 11mm one and replaced it with one out of a 95 22R only 7mm thick. Worked perfectly. Fred Merry Christmas
