Can't get the clutch slave back on
Howdy, Yota Tech
First I would love to thank everyone for all the technical resources that are available on this forum. I have been able to search and lurk for 6 weeks without having to post any questions, but now I am stuck.......
I have an 83' 4wd pickup that I bought recently with a shot clutch. This is my first time to replace a clutch and every thing went really slooooow. The tranny came out and went back fairly smooth. I got all the bellhousing bolts back in and the first thing I tried to bolt back up was the clutch slave. The problem is I could not get it to to line up with it's mounting holes. It sits about an 1/8 of an inch forward of the holes. I jacked with the clutch fork and the ball that it levers on popped out of its retaining clip.
A. do I really need to he-man the clutch slave on or should it be a graceful process
B. do I need to take the the tranny back out and pop the clutch fork back in place ( I was hoping all that force would do it for me )
I would not be suprised at all if I messed something up, but I will learn for next time I did not want to go any farther If I just have to rip it out again....
The other thing is that I had to replace my input shaft seal and the part # for an L52 did not fit it instead took a G series seal ( p# 1981 I believe ) anybody else have this happen ? Is it marked on the case what tranny it is?/
Thanks for any help or direction,
Zac

I'm trying to picture the "ball that it pivots on" and it's retaining clips. The hub which the throwout bearing is pressed onto connects to the clutch fork with two clips. Is that what you're talking about?
I remember my slave cylinder compressing easily. Where did you buy it? Mine went on with no issues, you just push the rod in and the bolt holes should just line right up. Maybe photos? Always helpful.
What's the fork doing? Is it loose or something? I'm guessing my clips aren't on there any more, but it's pressed against the bearing which I think is always pressed against the clutch-cover teeth (someone please correct me) so it should be anchored in there pretty well. Every time I bumped the tranny or the fork when we were putting the tranny back in, those flimsy clips would pop off. I can't imagine they're still on there now.

I would agree ... with the above posts .. I'm sure the clips that pull the release bearing hub have popped off .. removal of the tranny again is the only way . what you'll need to do is loosten the blead nipple on the slave , inorder to compress it when you go to install it again .

Wow, thanks for the quick responses..But I can't get a picture now... my brother got in my truck and started pumping the clutch pedal, the slave cyl. did not like that much. Looks like I will replace that to.Lol I am just going to take it back apart and redo it. Here is a pic of my truck though---
1983, 131,000 original miles, but sataround for 12 years. it looks good but needs some work.

Yes, nice truck!
For all of our information, can somebody explain the exact configuration of the clutch fork, throwout bearing and clutch cover plate when it's all put back together? I asked about this when I put mine back together and was freaked out about my clips popping off and threw an idea out of how I thought it maybe all fit together and nobody agreed with me or corrected me...is it all sandwiched tight enough that the clips shouldn't matter much once it's back together? What would happen if the clips popped off once it's back together? I really have a hard time believing mine are still there.

I hear yah it's alot of work. I just finished replacing the clutch on my 83. A suggestion to everyone out there: When I put mine back together took the transfer case off the transmission and it was lighter to work with. The transfer case it easy to put back on after the tranny is on. I also had to replace the transfer case mount and they are not cheap - $130
