Air Injection Pump, Do I need it ????

Air Injection Pump, Do I need it ????
I got a 1980 Toyota given to me.
Trying to get it go'n.
On the air breather I seen some hoses missing, bigger hoses (about 1" Dia.)
Bought a repair manual and it shows some kind of a "AIR INJECTION" system with a pump and all sorts of hoses and things.
Well, all my stuff is gone. Someone removed it all. Pump and everything. The only thing that remains is the air breather with some missing hoses, and a 1" hose at the back of the engine just a hang'n.
Is this cause for alarm ?!?!?!?
Do I need this stuff to make it run ????
