I have begun the process of making my '82 2WD beautiful again...I have ALOT of work ahead of me. I plan to do the Rusty Roller paintjob because I have seen some very impressive results on various autos that have been done so far. One of the most daunting tasks ahead is removal of the windshield without (hopefully) breaking it. Anyone that has done this successfully and has tips, feel free to share.

I'll post pics once it is completely done.

The only advice I can give you is go ahead and save your self some time and brake the windshield NOW! I got a new one installed for about $180

I've tried that wire tool they sell at Harbor Freight. Ended up using the hammer to remove it LOL. I cracked the darn thing.

just take your time and tape it off really well.

How does that AZ sun affect your windshield trim?

If it isn't too bad I'd tape it off, it isn't like you'll have rust to deal with. God rust sucks.

dont do it! if you must remove it, call a glass company and for a minimal service charge they will come out and remove it for you. i learned the hard way and cracked mine. as soon as that weatherstripping gets hardened up its a bear to get out. pretty sure it was the first time my 18 year old daughter saw me cry.
p.s. cant wait to see the results of the paint job!

I've got to pull the windshield because there is rust under the gasket along the bottom, otherwise I might consider just taping it off real well. I'm gonna call around this next week and see if I can find a professional to come break it...

surely the gasket needs replacement anyways .. so I would just cut it out with a razor .. gaskets are fairly cheep

Believe it or not Corey, the gasket is the original and its in excellent condition...I kinda hate to cut it. I already priced a new one at about 45 bucks though.

Here's a few pics of where I'm starting. I'm painting (spray) the door jams, etc. first. I'm also POR-15'ing some stuff too. (bumper brackets, etc.)

well then you can remove it .. if you have patients !!

the "lip" on the inside is what holds it in .. if you "work" on the inside -- folding the inner lip out all around the shield .. with pressure from the inside (4 hands are better then 2) you can press the shield out with success ..

Yea...I thought about cutting several 6-8 inch long 3/8" round dowel pieces to slip behind that inner lip as I pull it away from the cab body to hold it out away from the body (make sense?) then get the wife to help me gently push from the inside and press it out.

Another benefit to doing this is if it cracks, I can blame her.

Well...I called SafeLite and apparently our windshields only cost SafeLite a whopping two dollars and 95 cents....haha...because I asked the guy to give me a quote to come out and remove my perfectly good windshield and then come back in a week or so and put it back in after I am done with body work and paint.

His quote was $100 to come out and remove it, then another $100 to come put it back in....AND of course NO guarantee that they could pull off this incredible feat without breaking it...

SO....I go online to Safelite's website for an "instant quote" on them coming to my house and REPLACING my windshield with a BRAND NEW one including new gasket...

The quote??: $202.95 WTF genius??

So, for a mere $2.95 I get to chuck a bowling ball thru my windshield (if, of course, I botch my attempt at successful removal)

hahaha sounds like good logic to me. rofl. They should give you a discount if they don't have to remove the old windshield and old gasket. Afterall their quote includes said labor to remove your old one.
