4x2 tranny
so i broke my 4x2 tranny. have no clue what it is... think its a w55 or a w56
i am almost positive my truck has a w56 2wd tranny. unless the w55 appears exactly the same?....

There should be a plate somewhere on the trans that has a code on it. It probably won't say W55 or W56, but some other Toyota number that you'll need to cross reference with a chart.
Now we need to dig up that chart....

i was actually thinking about that... now instead of having my driveshaft shortened, can i get a stock driveshaft from a short bed, std cab 4x4? i know i will also need the crossmember... i am trying to keep this as cheap as possible though and 4x2 is fine with me if i can get it up and running soon..... without my truck running, i cant work... and without work, my available $ gos into negative numbers....

SAS time! i think you'd at least need to get the t-case end flange yoke for the driveshaft, don't the 2wds use a slip yoke(splines on the driveshaft go into the tranny)?
of course if you want to keep it a 2wd, easiest way would be to find a 2wd truck in the junkyard. if you want a straight answer on if you can convert a 4x4 transmission to a 4x2 one, go over to marlin's site and ask on his board. they can set you straight
it's a beautiful day outside, i'm trying to get my engine running again but i've been having thoughts of starting the drivetrain/suspension build today...

Seems like a 2wd transmission would be a cheapier route and get you back on the roads faster. If you go 4wd you'd have to buy a transmission, transfer case, driveline and crossmember and get it all stuffed in there.

actually i dont think its 20 year old parts... figuring its a w56, and my truck is a 22r, it was actaully for a efi which had mroe power... it probably had more to do with my heavy foot and pushing 31s on 3.07 gears with a centerforce dual friction clutch......
yes, it would be quite easy for me to do an sas and 4x4 conversion, and i might, but i need to get back on the road first and foremost.....
if someone can sell me a 4x4 tranny, tcase, crossmember, and rear truck driveshaft for a std cab shortbed, for cheap, i will go that route

Bahahaha, too much power. You're using a what? 22r? Not enough strength to turn the big ol' tires.
The tranny from a 4wd is not the same, so either start your 4X4 conversion or get another tranny for a 2wd.

hey my 22r has liek over 100 hp and with the way i drive, it probably shock torqued it......
yeah i found htat out earlier today... i guess internally they are the same, but the output shafts are different the 4x4 has a female output and the 4x2 has a male output shaft
