22R still running rich.
Ok, I just did a complete top end rebuild on my 22R. Just about everything has been replaced or rebuilt but the block. Good compression (160,155,155,160.) New LC cam,header,timing chain and new Weber 38 carb. I have set the Weber up as per instructions and installed a Holley low pressure regulator set at 3psi. Good bottom end power but no top end power at all. Starts fine and runs good to about 1/4- 1/2 throttle but when go past half throttle it falls flat and just bogs (no more pull) down. If I let off the fuel it
picks back up again. Strong gas smell from exhaust and the oil is starting to smell like fuel. Other than that it runs good and idles fine. Could my ignition need to be upgraded ? I have tried just about everything to lean this thing out.
Only thing I can think of to do next is rejet the main circuit, ignition upgrade and electric fuel pump.
Anyone else running a Weber 38 on a 22R with some success???

I have the exact same problem. My solution just put the fuel reg at 5 to 5.5psi. I have no idea but it fixes the problem and runs like a champ on and offroad.
I have a Spectra fuel reg. and when i follow the weber specs of 2.5-3psi it just cuts off the power above 3000rpm. Havnt tried changing out the regulator to see if faulty yet, but so far the higher psi has worked for over a year now. When i have more time ill look into it more. My ideas are wrong float level, fuel pump, or faulty regulator.

I must be getting too much fuel at half throttle. 1st and 2nd gear pull good but
when I get on the highway and get into 3rd-5th it just bogs at half throttle and the gas smell is very strong inside the cab. I just ordered a Carter 4070
electric fuel pump and I am going to scrap the stock pump and put a block off plate over the hole. I am also going to run just the Carter pump with no regulator or return line. The Carter only puts out 4psi. I will let you know how it works out.

Ok, I just installed the Carter electric pump and it did make a big difference. Mostly in the throttle response. Much smoother and more power for sure but the top end power not that great when I get it on the highway. I then took the carb apart to see what jets came with the kit and for some reason the idle jets were not the same. They had a 55 and a 52 in there and 185 AC jets and 142 main jets. I changed the idles to 45s and the mains to 145 and left the 185 AC jets. This made the biggest change in how the truck ran. It now pulls strong with lots of power in all gears but 5th, but I think it's because of the Goodyear 32" tires. I think if I were to change the gears for the 32s it would pull stronger through all the gears. Overall I am very happy with the results and I think the overall rich condition I was getting was a result of the mechanical fuel pump.
This is what I ended up with.
145 mains
185 AC
45 idle
mix screw out 1.75 turns out and 1.5 turns out on the engine side.

Thats good news! Whats the model of the pump did you get?
Ya just last week I took my 38 right apart and cleaned it right out and checked all the jets. I had to special order my idle jets for .40 since the .45 was still running rich on me.
Mains are 142 and ac 185 too.
Still trying to dial in my mains seems to be alittle heistation sometimes around 2300rpm. I cant ever use 5th anymore with the boggers but to no means is my truck slow. still can cruise at 120 on the highway and maybe 90 uphills.

It's Carter 4070 (no fuel return line) I just removed the stock mechanical fuel pump and blocked it off. I am very close to getting the carb set up properly but I think I can still get more out of it. I did some more testing today with different jets to see if I could clean it up some more.
On the Weber 38, if the mixture screw is more than 11/2 turns out then the Idle jet is too lean (too small). When the mixture screw is ½ turn or less, then the Idle jet is too rich (too large).
I will need to go back up to a richer idle jet because I am now out 1 3/4 turns out on the mix screw to get best idle.
How many turns out is your mix screws?

Right now I'm at 1-1/4 out on the choke side and 3/4 on engine side.
Took me along time to get my idle dialed in but now it good. I tried .50's .55's and the .45's but all ran rich. The Bigger idle jets seemed have more grunt but my exhaust would smoke abit and started fouling my plugs.
You running a 20 or 22r? My 20r is bored to something like 2312cc maybe thats why i need the small idle's?
But ill look into that fuel pump, would be nice to know that atleast my pressure is at weber specs.
