1st gen with intermittent wiper switch- retrofit?
I found a really beat up sr5 pickup in the yard and it had an intermittent wiper setting so I decided to get the switch.
The switch had 7 wires instead of the usual 6. Someone had already snagged the wiring harness, so I could not see where the 7th wire went. I would assume there is a module controlling a pulsed 12v signal to the wiper motor.
I will try to locate one of these modules and retrofit my truck with the intermittent wiper feature. It would be cool if I could find a way to adjust the speed as well, but just having it will be great for the pacific northwestern fall mist.
I did used to own an old Volvo 122, and this guy's website started to describe the possibility of making your own intermittent wiper module for older cars that simply do not have it. I think there is some theory to it written, but no instructions for making one- and entertaining read as usual from him: http://sw-em.com/Windshield%20Wiper%...mittent_wipers

The relay is a green box in the passenger kick panel behind the computer. Here is some information I got on the wiper https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52203180 if you want to go thru it. There is some more information on the following pages.

Thanks, Terry, I am going to enjoy reading about that build. I just emailed the toyota salvage place in Colorado about the part, and also found one for a Celica one that might work, but it has no plug or partial wiring harness to attach to. I could contact the seller and see if they have a photo of the connector side of it, but I'm just as inclined to keep poking around for now. It can be tricky to know what keywords to use on Ebay sometimes. Here's the part:

I have been into numerous trucks and have never seen one like the one in the link. All I have seen is the green box. I installed a wiper delay into a truck and I just got the correct steering harness and the green box. There is a small wiring harness that connects the green box to the main harness. I will see if I can find a picture of it later on tonight. It might be in the link I provided.
All three of my builds in the links in my signature, on the first page, I try to show issues or upgrades on these trucks. I will try and add the wiper upgrade to the first page.

Anyway, all I have that I can see right now is that I've got a 7th wire from the switch itself. Then the wiper relay is going to have an input for that wire, a 12v power in wire, and an output. This may be more complicated than I thought. It sure would be handy, and in fact increase driving safety quite a bit in my neck of the woods this time of year, Slacker, you know what I'm talking about.
I can't wait until I find another SR5 with this feature in a yard where I can get my hands on it so I can strip out the wiring harness like someone already did to the one I got the switch off of. Or the part of it that ties in to just the intermittent feature.
Hope I don't need a new wiper motor or something else major to make it work.

Hm. I just poked around and can't find anything that says wiper relay. I found the turn signal relay ABOVE the emissions computer, two cylindrical relays on a plug block I believe are the headlight relays (center firewall above gas pedal), the beeper box (passenger side), and the charge light relay (also passenger side.)
Not sure if I mentioned it's an '82 if that narrows it down. I'm also unsure if the switching for the stalk I have now is done directly without a relay, or if there is an existing relay I have not yet found that has the intermittent function waiting to be tapped into with the new switch. It IS dark out and I had to use a flashlight.
Outsane, did you find that there was a 7th wire as opposed to your old one? Not sure if yours is a 1st gen, but on mine, everything on the steering column goes through one big plug block, and I have had to cut and solder/shrink tube all the things I replace (so far just two wiper stalks.) I tried pulling the individual connector pins, but that's too much hassle and borders on impossible. So I am just wondering about the extra wire, I can install one extra pin in the plug block if needed, I have extras.

Opps!!! That was my screw up. I seen first gen and was thinking 4runner. I should of paid attention to the year model you had it listed as. The information I posted pertained to 84 and newer.
I haven't worked on a 79-83 in a long time so am not sure about that.

ok .. here is what I remember ..
you need to replace the wiper/signal switch with the one with the intermittent function and you need to add the relay , and that's it . ( see below) ..
wiring is there , and it's all plug and play . I believe being yours is an /82 .. you need to stick to /81-/83 parts
that's all I remember , hope it helps

Wow, that site has the wiper relay at $200+!
http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_U_198...DA_8401.5.html
Sounds like I need to find the right relay for 1st gen and install the corresponding in in the plug for the 7th wire I'll now have. I have spare pins, I don't remember there being any trace of the 7th wire on the steering wheel side of the big plug, but have extra pins from that side that I can slide and clip into the plastic plug.
Hoping the 7th wire exists on the main harness, and will recheck and confirm that. Also will check into the one or two extra plugs I have dangling above the emissions computer. Hopefuly those are the ones that connect to the relay.

now to throw a possible wrench into your search for intermittent wipers is that there may be a difference between tilt and non tilt columns switches (not totally positive)
the wiring between 79-81 was slightly different from 82-83
the wiring between 79-81 was slightly different from 82-83

the wiring on the switch , and the relay is correct as I stated .. TILT is different though for sure
If you have a peak above , you will see production date is 80/08 for the relay ... combi switch is same

I got the switch out of a non-tilt column, and neither is mine, so I'm good there.
Once again, *I* need to look at my plug to see if there is a pin and wire on the other side for the 7th wire, and I'd love if *someone else* would look at and photograph where and by what plugs in the harness their intermittent module connects, or it may be a long time before I come across a truck in real life that has that feature.
I have one call to a local guy an hour away I can make (may have that truck, may not) and I've got the guy in Colorado, who needs a photo to know which module to send.

Right after I posted the above post, something fortuitous happened. I checked the inventory of the local Pick-N-Pull salvage yards, and sure enough, a new '83 pickup on the lot in the one nearest to me.
I got there 25 minutes before close, and found it. It was a pretty ratty 2wd, the tailgate was not really any better than mine, 2wd so I can't get the power steering off of it, so no big scores or anything. But it had intermittent wipers!
After looking around frantically for a few minutes since they were closing very soon, I did find the location of the wiper relay. It is under the dash on the passenger side.
It only cost $5 and change.
When I got to my truck, it had a jumper wired replacement plug there.
Relay I found:
Jumper wire plug in it's place on my truck:
I think the jumpered plug would be for if I were using a wiper stalk that had the single wipe feature when you push up on the stalk. With the intermittent, it probably activates that circuit which would go through the relay instead if the wire. I forgot if I had a wire left over when I was in the column last, so we'll see if I can find that single awua with red stripe wire anywhere.

On the next generation of trucks, if they don't have wiper delay, that is what Toyota used as a jumper to replace the delay box is that jumper that you are showing.
You may need a small section of harness that connects to the box to the harness. It is just a short piece with to plugs on each end, that applies to the 84-88 and am guessing would be some what the same for your generation.

I got in there tonight and unplugged the main plug on the left on the main wiring harness with all the plugs for the wipers and horn. I took ends of each wire on the wiper plug, stripped them, and inserted them into the plug ends on the main harness by color. The intermittent setting wire was different from the main harness wire color, but it was the only one left in that area, and with the relay plugged in, it worked. I soldered all the wires in, and used an extra section of wire to bypass the plug and wired the intermittent function in directly. It all works.
