Front Door Speaker Suggestions for 3rd gen 4Runner
What does everyone suggest for front door speakers on a 97 4Runner? What size, type (2 way, composite, etc), brand, or even a specific speaker...?

i'm not sure, you'd have to look to see.
and for the money, the best cheap upgrade you can do for your stock speakers is a new head unit. toyota has good head units but you might not even notice the difference of new speakers. there are plenty of decent HU's you can get in the 100-200 $ price range and IMO the sound will be better than new speakers. but if you throw in new speakers WITH the head unit, then it'll be a world of a difference.

boston acoustics and infinity makes some nice speakers that are pretty good with HU power and have a nice mellow sound. 6.5's will fit in the front doors. dont know about the rears....i dont run a rear stage, but i believe the stocks are 5.25. i have phoenix gold xenons in my front doors right now. off an amp they sound real nice for the $

I'm runnin Infinity reference 6.5" in the front and pioneer 5.25" in the rear off of my sony headunit and they sound real nice. You have to modify the front speaker mounts a little for the 6.5" speakers and I got new mounts for the rear... the stock rears are a funky size, like 4.5" or something...

There are a bunch of companies that make a good speakers for relatively decent prices. Alpine, Memphis, Phoenix Gold, Infinity, the list goes on. If you want to spend some bucks MB Quart is my favorite for components. Alot depends on what kind of music you listen to, whether you want mellow or agressive, highs or lows. If I were you I would save up a couple hundred bucks and buck a decent 4 channel amp to run all the speakers off of. Deck power is minimal at best and actually worse for your speakers to muddy sound. Right now Im running Pioneer DEH8700, Memphis PR 6.5 components, 2 10in Alpine type S (the new ones), all of my trusty v12 expert. Clear and oh so loud in the single cab haha.

I just ordered some Phoenix Gold 6.5" component speakers for 93 bucks shipped off eBay. Do a eBay search for RSD65cs and you should find them...I chose those speakers because everyone on caraudio.com seems to be raving about the bang for the buck and incredible mid bass for that price range. I personally can't stand infinity speakers because mid bass is non existent and the tweeters are kind of tinny, maybe just my preference though...
It isn't the easiest install in the world to get a 6.5 in the front doors of our rigs, Toyota kinda screwed us on that by making the door panel very limited on space for the speaker.

These are amazing speakers http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...263623,00.html , prob the best pioneer has made (for the price, you can find them around $250)
BUT you need an amp, without them it'll sound like crap, atleast 100w rms x 2...
Running off headunit power, i put some rockford non-components in my dads van and they sound great (3 way coaxial)... but my infinity reference 2 way components sounded terrible off stock power, much better with an amp, but still not good below 80hz...

id recommend just going around to local audio shops and circuit city/best buy whatevers and listening to each speaker personally. each speaker will have a totally different sound depending on its materials and what its intended for. we can make recommendations for you, but its your vehicle that youll be listening to music in, so u want the sound that YOU like. keep in mind though, that they wont sound exactly how they do at the store in the vehicle, but you can get a general idea of midbass and "harshness" of the highs i guess.

Ok guys, my stock speakers in my 99' sound great with a pioneer deh-p880prs headunit... just not good below 125hz... (thats what the sub is for anyways).
Aftermarket speakers wont sound great unless you amp them.
You CAN get some aftermarket ones, but find a lower RMS rating, so they'll work better unless you plan on an amp.
no point buying 100w rms rated speakers if youre only going to give them 20, theyre not as efficient at 20 w, where a 35w rms speaker is going to be more efficient.
