Best place to mount Xm Radio antenna.

I just got Xm Radio for Christmas, its GREAT by the way. I just need some help in terms of a location to mount the antenna. I searched and couldn't come up with a whole lot. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone that has it could chime in with some advice.

Thanks Guys, and Merry christmas!

I had mine installed at tweeter, and they just ran the wire to the back of the runner, and put it on the roof in the back part of the truck.

I put mine in the easiest place I could find, 4 inches above the front windsheild in the middle between the windsheild and sunroof.

Wire goes through the firewall grommet then follows the windshild gasket to where it goes. About 20mins of work.

I would post a pic but it's dark and raining.

Since my radio is mounted on the dash on the passanger side, my wire goes under the dash, under the plastic pieve of both passanger side doors, then under the carpet on the passanger wheel well and under the carpet in the trunk, then it goes across under the door jamb under the tail gate, then up the drivers side tailgate doorjamb and finally up to the roof where it magnetizes itself in a corner of the roof rack, never moves anywhere.

I still have enough slack in the line and nothing cuts the wire no matter which door you open/close.

I think I did it this way (instead of going straight up) is because this way it is completely out of sight and you didn't have to take half the dash apart to make it so.

As an installer at Circuit City, I literally have to deal with this on a daily basis. On the 3rd and 4th gen there is no debate - back of the vehicle on top. Second gens on the other hand you either have to place the antenna near the sunroof or at the leading edge of the roof and tuck the wire into the winsheild seal....from there into the door grommet or a firewall grommet.

I ran the wire under the dash, along the top of the doors all the way back through the tail gate weather stripping and mounted the antenna on the back on the roof, it looks good and works excellent. The wire is tucked out the way and will not get cut.

I love my XM

So why is it the back of the truck and not the front? Why can't antennas mounted on 2nd gens be on the back too? Just wondering.

I did my install pretty professionally, pretty proud I figured it out myself, so I was just wondering what the reason is.

You guys route the wire under the door seals etc., correct?

The guys that installed the XM in my Subaru said that the antenna just needs an unobstructed view of the sky . . . . apparently glass and cardboard don't matter . . . . just metal. They did a stealth install of my antenna underneath the rear deck below the rear window on my Impreza. I get great reception except under the biggest freeway overpasses that must contain a lot of steel.

You're getting plenty of good advice for the antenna. I just got the Sirius One and hardwired my power cord into the map light console. It's always hot, so power never goes out and it's realy nice to not use one of the cig lighter outlets. Good luck.

the main reason is how our tailgates close - most of the SUVs on the market all have a liftable hatch. This makes running the wire easy as pie. Im sure it can be done on a 2nd gen back there but its going to take a bit of work I'd imagine. Ill give mine a close look today if the customers leave us alone....LOL

Typically yes we run them just under the door seals - using a Fishman vinyl tucker you can run an antenna like this in under 5 minutes on most vehicles.

eeeeeh i would put that unit on a switched lead and not a constant, only because if you leave the unit on it could drain your battery.

This is how I installed the antenna.
There is gap between the plastic trim and the metal body.
Unscrew the screw shown in the picture and run the wire under it.
That will get wire under the plastic trim piece.
Push the antenna wire in with a credit card all the way up and around.

I used a little bit of velcro to mount my attena on top of my dash. I still get perfect reception and I didn't have to take apart my interior and run a wire all over the place.
