- Toyota Tundra How to Change Engine Oil<br>Step by step instructions for do-it-yourself repairs.
What oil do you use?
#2
Any non recycled oil is fine, as long as you change it before it goes black. Toyota Canada uses Esso/Exxon oil, in 5w30. You will be fine with Exxon/Mobil1, or any other synthetic.
Be sure to use the genuine Toyota oil filters.

I use Royal Purple in my crankcase, diffs and tranny. I change the crankcase twice a year and it looks pretty good. I live very close to work so I don't put many miles on the truck on average. So two RP oil changes equals 4 regular oil changes at cost.
From everything I've read between synthetic and regular dino, the car parts with synthetic oils are worn about the same but are a little bit cleaner upon inspection.
I do rev my 22RE between 3500 - 4000 RPM.

On a factory new engine, feel free to use synthetics right from the start. It will be fine.

I run Pennzoil 10w-30 in everything I own. Change my oil between 2,800 and 3,000 miles. If I could afford it or when I buy a nicer car, I will use Mobile 1. But so far Pennzoil has treated my motors great.
The one rebuild I did I was told not to use synthetic and up until I sold it it never burned or leaked a drop. So if it were me I wouldn't use synthetic on a rebuild. Perhaps after you feel the motor is broken in synthetic would be a good option.

Change your oil every 3,000
I'm using 10W 40. No matter what you use you still have to change it every 3,000 miles because you own a toyota, a engine that is know for sludging.i have read where people use full synethic and wait 5000 and 7500 miles to change their oil and was loosing 1/2 to 1 qt of oil.

Amsoil 5w-30 with Amsoil filter
They say on their package that if you use both together, you won't need changing for a year or 15000miles. I decided to do a trial with their products. I put them in last year, and just to be safe considered my driving to be 'severe' (stop n go, short distance trips), so I changed them recently at the 10 month marker. Color looked nearly the same as when I put fresh qts in.
I'd use Mobil1 too if I had a second choice. But I'd make sure I matched it up with a Mobil1 filter.
Redline, Royal Purple, Castrol, etc...they're all good synthetic brands. Not sure what are good filters though, above Toyota standard.
I had read somewhere on that use-dino-oil-to-break-in-new-engines-rule. I've also read that switching to synthetic on an engine that's already got oil leak problems is going to aggravate the leaks due to a much slippery-thin structure compared to dino.
Final answer is to just pick one and check if whether the oil level actually decreases significantly.
Great topic to debate however.
