Where are my Tacoma Spark Plugs?
:pat: Anyone know what has Toyota done with the spark plugs? I popped open my hood on my 2001 Tacoma and don't see spark plugs anymore...There are these little square electronic modules that are wried to the cylinder soemhow...my guess this is somtype of highvoltage transistorized version of the spark plug...Anyone else know the scoop?

Hey! Welcome to the forum!
Is your truck a diesel? Diesels don't have spark plugs (at least from what I understand). Are you talking about the end of the spark plug wires that would go into the distributor on older vehicles? A lot of new vehicles don't have distributors, but have some electronic modules or something instead. You should have spark plugs on the other end of the wires unless somebody stole them or is trying to do some sort of practical joke.
Anyhow, just thought I'd say welcome!
Have fun.

I was hoping I wasn't the only person who had this problem. I have a 99 and I went through the same thing. I had to show other people so they wouldn't think I was crazy. I kept telling 'em, "Dude, I swear they're not there." I just figured they were down there somewhere.

Just follow the wires from the ignition coil to the top of the valve cover. Use your fingers to pull the wire off. Don't pull on the wires, but the round rubber "thingies" that the wires go into. The plugs are way down in there. You'll need an extension to get to them.

I want to get a good service manual for my Tacoma...2001...Anyone got any suggestions...Hayes is Ok but not too many details, ya know what I mean. Chiltons had a good manual back in the 80's but cut them down pretty much...I was thinking of getting a factory service manual...but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg to get one. Especially for a Toyota (Ill probably never need to use it!!). My last truck was 1989 and lasted 11 years! I bought it new back in 89 for $15k and sold it 11 years later for $5k! It only had 103.000 miles on it!! On a Toyota truck thats just getting broken in!! right!
Man you guys are fast in your replies...Thanks everyone for their input...see yall...

On the passenger side of the engine. The coil packs are actually part of the spark plug boot. You have to unscrew 2 small bolts. Then pull off the ignition coil. The boot is attached to the bottom of the coil. The plug is under there.
