Puchased a power inverter a few months ago and used it in my 4R to power my laptop, but then one day it stopped working. I fist thought it was the power inverter itself but found out it was the cigarette lighter when I used the inverter in a friends car. I looked at the solder-like fuse on the back of the cigarette lighter but it looks to be OK. I think it might be a short or something similar because the bulb that lights up the cigarette lighter and the ash tray doesn't work either. Can someone help me with my problem. Thanks.

 

Test the fuse with a test light or volt meter... if its ok see if you have power at the cig lighter... if you don't then you have a wiring problem, if you do have power, suspect a bad ground....

 

I don't believe the fusible link wire on the back of the 12v outlet would take out the small lights that you say are out. Worth checking, but I think you're going to have to look further back in the system.

 

Sounds like you need to check the fuse in the fuse box...

There is no fuse for the cigarette lighter, the only fuse is a solder-like fuse on the back of the cigarette lighter and it looks fine.

 

The lighter is indeed fused - it's piggybacked off of something else, I think it's the ACC fuse. Check ALL of the fuses behind the panel near your left knee.

 

The 10a turn fuse supplies B+ to this circuit. Check this fuse with a test light.
Most likely it's OK ,if you have turn /Haz lights. You need to ck. if you have a good ground and B+ at the lighter , if you do , it's a bad lighter or bad fuse behind the lighter, if you don't , start checking wiring .

 

I have never seen the said fuse behind the lighter...I'll look tonight, because I really don't think there is one there, it should be in the fuse panel.

 

It's not really a fuse, it's called a "fusible link". Same concept, different implementation.


edit: I figured I'd babble about the difference.

Most automotive fuses are designed to be "fast blow", when the current exceeds the rated amount, the fuse will let loose pretty dern quick. Some fuses are "slow blow" where the current can exceed the limit for a few seconds before it lets go (these are used to hand surge currents for things like electric motors).

A "fusible link" is like a REALLY long delay slow-blow. The fusible link on the lighter will last about 10 minutes, though the time can vary widely. These are used 'cause it's normal for a lot of current to be at that circuit, but not for a VERY long time. This helps protect from things like... power inverters ... being left and drawing at the max current of the circuit for a long period of time.

 

take out the stock cig lighter and put in one from radio shack. hard wire it to the battery... best 6 bucks spent. i have a total of 3 full time cig lighters throughout the truck. one in stock spot, one tucked up next to the fuse box for my gps, and one in the rear.

 

i used a power inverter goin to the beach to run a ps2. well long story short same thing happend to me also that happened to you. so i went to the dealership bought a new cigerette lighter assembly (the actual lighter and plug). put the new one in and has worked fine ever since. i never did anything with any sort of fuse, just replaced the lighter

 

From what I hear, I think I'll check all the fuses in the fusebox on the drivers side kick panel and if still no luck, I'll be stopping by a nearby Radio Shack.

 

I ran a air compressor off mine and the same thing happened. Mine was shorted. Replaced with new Toyota lighter assembly and no problem since. Good luck.

 

Same thing here, Blew the fuse in the fuse box under the hood, good thing there are spares. DONT try running a full size power drill through a inverter from the lighter, It doesn't work.... Lesson learned...

 

What is the part number for the 12v accessory plugs(female part)?...is the cig lighter assembly next to the ash tray the same as the accessory plugs?

 

Bump. I have not been able to find the individual accessory outlet. Is it even available? Is it replaceable?

 

Under the hood there is a relay that controls a lot of the xtras and such but cannot remember the name of it. Its possible that it may have gone south for the reast of its life....

 

what about other sockets? on '99 there are two others up front, and one in back (though they are on different circuits)
