I have a 96 Runner with just under 200K Miles on it.. I am getting an intermittent brake warning light. The strange thing is, it only happens in the morning when I first start it. It goes on and off for the first 5 minutes or so then it goes off for the rest of the day, until the next AM...Any ideas? Thanks in advance...BTW the brake fluid resevoir is full up..

 

Sounds like your fluid is low. Do you have a 5 speed? When my fluid was low everytime I shifted from first to second the light would flash. Check your fluid level and if it's low, fill it just above the fill line and it should stop.

 

Yeah for some reason if mine isn't just above the fill line, my brake light comes too.

 

I've also had the switch in the lid of the master cylinder go bad. If the fluid is not low, you could try jumping out the wires going to the switch. If that fixes the problem then you know you've got a bad switch in the lid.

 

The strange part is it only does it in the morning for the first few minutes of the drive and goes away.. I have the brake resevoir filled all the way up to the max, so I can't imagine it is because of the brake fluid level..

Another common complaint. I thought the same thing untill I added a smidgen more fluid. Give it a try. I'll bet that as the fluid warms up after you begin driving, the expansion (as little as it may be) is enough to raise the level to prevent the light from coming on.
