toyota's need the taillight converter because they use separate turn and stop bulbs. there should be a plug-n-play kit for your truck if you don't feel up to putting your own harness together
i have to build my own since there isn't a kit for 2nd gen 4runners...grrr

well, the guy i bought it from wired it up with a converter, and apparantly
it worked cause he would pull a trailer. but i bought a plug in play converter
and when i went to plug it up there were no factory plugs! he cut them off and made his own wiring. i checked all my connections on the truck and trailer
and i when i hook a circuit tester up to the truck wiring it shows its working blinker and all, but when i hook it to the trailer no lights come on the trailer. checked my trailer connections and ground and still nothing. any ideas what it could be? im getting frustrated.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, can someone post links or details on how to wire up a 93 4runner.
I bought mine with a 4 pole wire hanging at the hitch, but today i hooked up to a trailer and the turn signals and driving lights didnt work.
do i really need a kit with a converter, or is there a diagram for each wire to the trailer connector.

The converter kit is around $20 and prevents the problems of splices and is easily installed. Not sure where to find a diagram but I would use the following kit below.
