Custom LED Turn signals in Corner lights

My truck is a 86 4x4(2nd gen) So this will work on 1st gen Runners and Trucks. I think it would also work on 3rd gen trucks and 2nd gen Runners, and maybe Tacomas but dont quote me on that.
Saw this in a Toyota Offroad Owners mag, will find out which one. But the write up/how to was using 4-3/4" round LED lights and putting them in the corners lights(2 each) and wiring the LEDs as turn signals. I thought why not try it. I found that O’Reilys carrys small LED round lights and they are 3/4” for about $7 each. So I got 4. I finally installed them this past Sunday and heres the pics and how to.
PS they will flash fast cause they are such a low draw which will make the fuse think there out but there is a by pass. I will have to look that up in the mag and add it to this. I will try to get it done tonight.
Tools needed: small drill bit(pilot hole, I did 2 sizes just to be safe)3/4" hole saw or bore bit(I wouldnt use a regular bit) Corner lights, 4- 3/4" LED round lights, shrink wrap, wire cutters, wire stripper, sodering iron, soder, sharpie, masking tape, electrical tape, turn signal connecter and a lighter
Optional: Air compressor(clean out the lights after drilling) and a beverage(mine was ice tea haha)
The lights

I centered the tape and measure a 1/2" above the lip of outer lip of where the corner light goes. Used blue tape and red sharpie, what I had but found it worked good.

Drilled pilot then a second a little bigger, just to be safe so I didnt crack the plastic with the big bit
. Theres a section, not sure what its for next to where I mounted mine, the plastic comes up, so I trimmed it. Name: IMG_20130929_184347_012_zps7e4b6884.jpg

I used a small flat head screw driver to help press the the gromets it, It helped and be gentle. This is plastic. But once there in Name: IMG_20130929_190405_616_zpscbfbf021.jpg

Now our favorite part, the wiring, which wasnt hard, if you have installed aux lights , then this should be easy. Just clip the wire from the connecter(the turn signal one, the side that has the light) give your self at least half the lenght, I did little over half. then connect the wires, the color wire will differ from from years, models. but I went green to neg-black(on the led) and the yellow with black light to pos-white(on the led) put a little bit of soder and shrink wrapped them.

Now I havent tested mine yet, my truck is still a work in progress( check my build thread and you will see) But will try to put the battary in and test them soon.
Final product, cant see them that good but I will test soon, I hope to, as long as the wife doesnt make a bigger honey do list for me since winter is coming up haha. And yes I did do this to 2 brand new corner lights I got off Amazon. My originals were busted in the wreck. If your looking for new corners I do still have the link on Amazon for them, I think I paid less the $40 for both, maybe $30 cant remember.

There it is, If you wanna try it go for it. Its a better alternative to Bumper turn signals, less chance of braking while wheeling and it adds a custom look. I will find out where the fuse is that you have to modify so you dont get the quick flashing and add it to here. I believe it a big green box one but not 100% but I will find out and add.

Excellent, looks wonderful I have been thinking of the same thing so I can fit some led driving lights of some sort in the signal holes.

Excellent

Oh and if you go to superbright LEDs you can get a plug and play flasher doesn't trip on minimum loads, works perfect on mine since I converted all my signals to LEDs.

It's under the European flashers, just check your pins to make sure they match up, it has a description of the flasher under info, I have also seen a thread on here where you can modify the flasher to work but I never tried it I just ordered a plug and play

Like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Electronic-LED-Turn-Signals-Relay-Fix-Flasher-Blinker-/370876452132?_trksid=p2054897.l4275 Hard to beat the price is you can wait 2 weeks. I DO NOT KNOW if this is the correct pin-out; someone else may know.

This is the one I ordered probably can compare specs on the site, it works perfect. Plugged right into the factory plug but didn't have the tabs to slide it back into place, just used some 3m double sided to hold it in the factory position. This is on a 91 so not sure if it's the same as an 86?

Oooo wow this is a great idea. I'm building my front bumper. and haven't found how to incorporate my lights into it. This would be a great alternative.

Creative! I've been think of ways to add turn signal in that location, although I already have added fender mounted ones.

No need to get special flasher relay if you're keeping your stock turn signal lights in the bumper.

Nice mod!

Many foreign countries have side mounted turn signal requirements. For whatever reason, Toyota for our gen trucks had two separate corner housing assemblies. The foreign hilux corner lights have two separate reflector assemblies in the corner -- the parking light and turn signal.

Haven't done yet, but on my to do likely early next year with some other electrical projects. Started the discussion here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...pickup-268454/

Was looking the other day and this is the cheapest option I found: http://www.ebay.com/itm/90-91-97-TOYOTA-HILUX-MK3-LN-RN-YN1002WD-4WD-MIGTHY-X-PICKUP-CORNER-LAMP-LIGHT-/230856340243?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35c01c3313&vxp=mtr
There's also the foreign side turn signal that mounts on front fender: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOYOTA-HILUX...-/261040187896

Or -- not sure if this in fact will fit our trucks or if lens would be swappable for our trucks (haven't actually looked to see if corner lights are a sealed unit), but there's this option too if you want to make your front corners a full time turn signal (bear in mind that parking lights are legally required)... http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOYOTA-HILUX...-/261025317947

Older gen side fender mount option: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOYOTA-Hilux...-/251081616804

Newer clear lens orange bulb option: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOYOTA-HILUX...-/281177539350

I like the fender mounted turn signals, but prefer something with LED AND more robust than the snap-in styles so I used Trail Gear signal lights on my mod here.

Since I'm keeping stock blinkers in bumper (incandescent blinkers=correct current for flasher relay), flasher relay works normally.
However, I still want additional one in corner like OP's... Someday.

Very nice project. Thank you for sharing.

My thought is if the average US driver would look for and know what a flashing fender light almost at the start of the front door of a vehicle means... Nearly exclusively, turn signals are corners these days -- and trucks with fenders seem to be 70s or so and have them at front top fenders where corner lights would be on more modern vehicles...

Also with fender mounts, I didn't want to add another rust spot and wiring to corner would be much less than fenders...Not sure, just thought I'd share what I'm thinking/have thought as I work through. I definitely agree for the need of some sort of side turn signal...

If you look at the corner light's ebay listing, pic 2 shows the housing protrusion and light orientation. About 1/2 of the light appears to reflect backwards. And about 1/2 to the side/forward. (Yes, that lens/orange cover is about 1/3 back to 2/3 forward, but the bulb and reflector looks like it's oriented much more to the rear...)

I did something similar, although I integrated it into my winch bumper. Used both amber and white versions of these

do you have a trailer light harness set up on the truck? I installed LEDs all over the truck and did the OEM Blinker relay conversion (clip) and when my turn signal is on... the rear running lights also blink. My 5 wire to 4 wire conversion box is most likely causing this, but its new and we are 90% sure we installed it correctly. Do you have any insight?

for the LED flasher I used a similar one to this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tridon-Novit...1UTpm5&vxp=mtr

practically plug and play.
Every bulb including headlights on my 81 were converted to LED
