‘RestoMod’ Brings Ultimate Drift Hilux Build to Life
Maybe the most complex and detailed Hilux ever done? Engineered to Slide’s craftsmanship of this classic project is unrivaled.
Need some motivation to get your project done during all this downtime? Want to pick up the tools, but procrastination has got the better of you? Well, we think we have the perfect solution. Welcome to building a sixth-generation Hilux from start to finish. This time, it’s a drift build. While that might sound a bit strange being this is YotaTech, we are encouraging members to open up their minds to new possibilities.
Usually, the best and most fun way to get a project done is to be creative and have fun. When the crew over at Engineered to Slide decided to build this one, you know they were having a good time doing so. We’re not sure you can build something as niche as a drift truck in any other fashion. So, if motorsports fabrication is your thing, this video from RestoMod is what you have been waiting for. The pure quality of the build is astonishing. Not only that, but this video will also show you how much time it really takes to go from start to finish with a project. That’s why if you need some motivation to get your current build ready to roll, this video might be the secret ingredient.
While it might be a bit far fetched to call this particular Hilux an “OE Hilux” any more, this doesn’t mean the work is any less interesting. As you will see, the complete chassis has been built from the ground up.
‘We aren’t sure if we’ve ever seen ‘this much effort put into a Hilux chassis. Everything is so cleanly done that you’d think a multi-million dollar robot was doing the work.’
The tube-frame chassis now will serve as the basis for the Hilux body. Let’s not forget that the work that goes into planning, testing, and actually fabricating something like this usually takes hundreds of hours. You will see the Engineering to Slide team has no time or expense spared in relation to build quality. It is obvious this is far from their first rodeo like this.
Just looking at the complexity of the strut tower mounting structure, it is amazing that something can be this detailed and bespoke. However, the hundreds of TIG stitch welds remind you that this is all hand-done work. We aren’t sure if we have ever seen anybody, irrespective of the build purpose, put this much effort into a Hilux chassis. Everything is so cleanly done that you’d think a multi-million dollar robot was doing the work with the most minute margin of error. Just looking at the suspension setup will make you think this was a fabrication symposium.
There is so much complexity in this build, a multi-episode breakdown of each component would just begin to scratch the surface! So, if you really want to appreciate the details, we suggest watching this video in full. However, if anything, watching this clip reminds us all that everything worth building takes time. So, it’s not necessarily about how fast you can get something done, but rather how it gets done. Hopefully, this will push some of you to get some more quality builds done as well. We want to see more beautiful Toyota trucks!
