Toyota Vehicles Conquer Best Used Car List in New Study

From the 4Runner and Tacoma, to the Corolla and the Prius, Toyota keeps on winning on the used lot via reliability, value retention.

It’s no secret a big part of Toyota’s success comes down to how reliable its models are. We all know how unkillable the Hilux is, and how steadfast the Corolla remains to this day. Without such a reputation, Toyota wouldn’t be where it is today; we might not even have a Lexus, for starters.

Car search engine I See Cars knows how valuable such a reputation can be on the used car market. They recently published a study on “the safest, most-reliable cars with the best value retention” for 2020. To the surprise of no one here, Toyota came out on top.

The company rated their picks in nine vehicle class categories, from “Best Used SUV,” to “Best Used Luxury SUV.” Only three categories — “Best Used EV,” “Best Used Sports Car,” and the aforementioned “Best Used Luxury SUV” — lacked any Toyota goodness at the top and runner-up spots.

2016 Lexus ES 350

As for the other six categories, the study chose the Lexus ES 350 as its top “Best Used Luxury Car,” beating out the Mercedes-Benz E-Class due to affordability, value retention, and durability once thought to belong solely to the Teutonic titans.

On the other end, the Corolla took the runner-up spot to the Honda Civic in the “Best Used Passenger Car” category. Both were noted for their ability to surpass 200,000 miles on the road with nary a mechanical wrinkle, though we prefer the Corolla for its sporty good looks.

2014 Toyota 4Runner

The “Best Used SUVs” category was one of two categories in this year’s study to be swept by Toyota. In this instance, the 4Runner and the Highlander took the top and runner-up spots, respectively. The former, the study notes, has been “a mainstay” on I See Cars’ lists over the years, and also took the top spot in the “Best Used Cars Under $30,000” value category, the only Toyota to land in the gold among the four value categories.

2015 Toyota Sienna SE

Other selected picks in the 2020 used car study include the Sienna for “Best Used Minivan,” and both the Prius and Camry Hybrid for “Best Used Hybrid Car.” Toyota also took up the majority of the “Best Used Cars Under $15,000” value category with the Corolla, Prius, Camry, and Yaris. It’s good to be the king, indeed.
