Toyota Drops 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition
It’s been four decades since the 4Runner first hit showrooms — and Toyota is ready to celebrate.
Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the venerable Toyota 4Runner. So to mark the occasion, the company is releasing a 40th Anniversary Special Edition with a retro livery. Given how hot standard 4Runners are right now, this is sure to be a hot ticket, and if you’re looking to score one, you’re going to need to act fast. Only 4,040 examples will be coming to our shores, and while the press release doesn’t specify how that number will be split, three colors will be available: White, Midnight Black Metallic and Barcelona Red Metallic.
Under the skin, the 40th Anniversary rigs will be identical to the SR5 Premium trim. That means it’s packing a 4.0-liter V6 good for 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of twist, and shifting duties will be handled by a five-speed automatic transmission. While the standard 4Runner is available in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive, to best celebrate the truck’s legendary ability off-road, each of the Special Edition models will send power to all four corners. And that’ll likely be just fine with the target audience.
Along with the tri-colored hockey stick graphics along the side, the 40th Anniversary models will feature a few more special touches to make them stand out. Up front, there’s the heritage grille with the off-center accents, and the 4Runner also rides on bronze-colored 17-inch alloy wheels, similar to what we saw on the 2021 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition. In the cabin, there are more bronze accents, including contrasting stitching on the seats and shift knob, and a numbered serial plate above the glove box.
In the announcement, there’s no timetable on when we can expect these bad boys to start rolling into your local Toyota dealer. There’s also no info on pricing, so it’s unclear just how much of a premium these wicked looking rigs will command. But given that they’re 2023 models? I’d expect we’ll start seeing them in the next few months.
Check out the gallery below for more pics, and if they float your boat? Get cracking! Given the loyal following the 4Runner has — and you know, current market conditions — you’d have to be crazy to expect them to sit on the lot!
