Toyota Australia Sells 10 Millionth Land Cruiser Ever Made

Australian market one of the biggest for iconic Land Cruiser, accounting for 1 million of the 10 million sold around the world.

Way back in 1951, Toyota rose from the ashes of the postwar era in a big way, debuting what would become its most iconic SUV ever made, the Land Cruiser. The FJ era alone helped cement the Land Cruiser’s place among fans of stylish off-roaders, thanks in part to the durability and ease of maintenance provided.

One of those places happens to be Australia, an off-roader’s paradise disguised as a country. According to Autoblog, the love for the Land Cruiser is so strong there that Toyota Australia announced it had sold the 10 millionth example of the rugged legend.

While 10 million is a lot, Autoblog says the Land Cruiser isn’t among the top 10 best-selling vehicles of all time; Road & Track adds Toyota’s best-seller is the Corolla, with over 40 million on the road. Still, hitting that milestone is an achievement few nameplates can ever dream of winning.

Speaking of winning, the Land Cruiser is a big winner in Australia, having sold over 1 million units since 1955. In 2018 alone, over 42,267 models were sold in the ‘Land Down Under,’ while us Yanks took home only 3,222 the same year. Overall, sales there account for 10.6% of the global total.

We think a lot of that has to do with the fact that the Aussies have some of the coolest Cruisers around, specifically the Land Cruiser 70, which can be had as either a single- or double-cab ute, a wagon, or a five-seat personnel carrier. The classic styling looks great everywhere, especially when kicking out the jams from Airbourne, Rose Tattoo, and AC/DC from the cab.

“Like all the other four-wheel-drives, the Land Cruisers had some issues in the extreme conditions,” said Toyota Australia sales and marketing chief Sean Hanley in a statement, “but it was Toyota’s response that set the company apart from its rivals. Toyota flew out engineers from Japan who lived on site to study and rectify the problems. They also flew out parts and sent the broken bits back to Japan – to analyse them and fix problems at the source… It’s that dedication to providing trouble-free performance that has been crucial to the success of the Toyota brand across Australia.”
