Take On Me: Can Rusty but Rockin’ 1985 4Runner Become a Reliable Daily Driver?

When this Toyota truck first hit the road, ‘We Are the World’ was landing on radio, ‘New Coke’ debuted, and the Titanic was found. But now, 35 years later, will it fare better than ‘New Coke’ did?

One of the great things about the threads in the YotaTech forums is that regardless of when the OP launched the thread, a lot of them are timeless and will forever be useful and reliable for fellow Toyota truck owners looking for information on how to best maintain their trucks.

We found this very interesting thread titled “Project Daily Driver: ’85 4Runner” that for member Damion812 picked up with the goal of fixing it, updating it, modifying it, and rebuilding it into a reliable daily driver. Now, granted, this truck came out in 1985, which was a very good year. It was a time of Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana. There was U2 and Blondie, and music still on MTV.

However, that all happened over 35 years ago, and in that time, this truck is done some living — and it shows. But clearly, from this post, it’s obvious that the truck still runs and can certainly be made into a daily driver. And to do that, Damion812 reached out to fellow truck owners in our forums to get their advice and opinions on the best way possible to accomplish this project. Here’s his original pitch:

‘My plan is to use it for a daily over the course of a year. …I want to try it with my favorite of makes, Toyota…I’ll probably use this forum for a lot of the resources and start a blog on the whole adventure here as well. …After the year I’ll probably look into doing a restoration on the 4Runner also.’

Although this thread was started a while back, it is constantly being updated with new advice from fellow YotaTech forum members and the topic is timeless enough that this post will continue to be a great resource for anyone looking to maintain their truck by themselves in the easiest and most economical way. And, of course, when you do it yourself, you know that the job was done right.
