Tacoma Reigns as Best Small Pickup for 19 Consecutive Years
Toyota’s 2023 sales report confirms what we already know; the Tacoma rules. It also shows that folks are buying Toyota Trucks like crazy.
It’s not surprising in the slightest to find out that Toyota and the Tacoma did well throughout the year 2023. With the release of a massive design upgrade for the 2024 model year, it’s fairly easy to predict there’d be a bit of an uptick in sales. Most of all, though, it’s woefully unsurprising to see that the Tacoma is once again the number one small pickup in America. That makes 19 consecutive years of the Tacoma’s reign with that title. Let’s dig into these figures and see what else Toyota has to celebrate.
Toyota’s recent press release outlining its 2023 sales has plenty of good news to report. For trucks, specifically, Toyota saw a 19.3 percent increase in sales for the month of December year over year. For the entire year of 2023, Truck sales are up 10.3 percent over the fourth quarter. It’s safe to assume that the late-in-year release of the updated Tacoma had a healthy effect on those figures. In addition, 2023 was the best-ever year for sales of the Tundra Hybrid.
Electrified Toyota Sales Are Through the Roof
Overall, Toyota is projected to be the number-one retail brand for the 12th consecutive year. Partially responsible is the massive uptick in both availability and sales of electrified vehicles. Qualifying vehicles include full battery electric models and hybrids. December saw an increase in electrified sales of nearly 60 percent, bringing the overall fourth-quarter electrified sales to a 56.4 percent increase compared to 2022. The Tundra Hybrid, Corolla Hybrid, stylish new Prius, and the release of a hybrid Tacoma undoubtedly are responsible for these sales figures.
2023 was also the best-ever year for the Mirai, RAV4 hybrid, BZ4X, and Corolla Hybrid thanks to the ever-growing electric and hybrid movement throughout the world. It was also the best year for the GR Corolla. However, it’s also the only year that the GR Corolla was available.
SUV sales increased by 17.7 percent in the fourth quarter, too. In addition, the Toyota RAV4 is now entering its eighth consecutive year as the best-selling SUV in the United States. The Sequoia also saw its best sales year to date, too. On the Lexus side of things, the company saw its best overall year for SUV sales, too. America loves an SUV, there’s no doubt about that.
Toyota Is on a Winning Streak
Overall, it seems that Toyota is on a hot streak across the board. Things are boding well for the updated look of the Tundra and the Tacoma, and the inclusion of hybrid powertrains seems to be lifting sales. Whether you’re a fan of EVs or not, the benefits of having electric power aiding good old internal combustion are hard to argue with. We’re looking forward to seeing what further innovations Toyota rolls out for the 2024 calendar year!
