Ready for Glamping: Toyota Hilux Camper

Toyota Hilux Camper

It might be the furthest thing from cheap, but this Toyota Hilux camper is kitted to the max.

If surfing JDM importer sites has taught me anything, it’s that when it comes to campers, the Land of the Rising Sun puts America to shame. Seriously, even as someone who has literally paid to avoid camping? I’m constantly impressed by the little rigs I’ve discovered — and this 1989 Hilux-based getaway vehicle is one of the coolest I’ve seen. It’s currently for sale on Northeast Auto Imports, and while the price is a whopping $67k, the attention to detail on display here is fantastic.

First, there’s the interior, which as the listing describes, has been kitted out with wood salvaged from a century-old house. To me, it gives the environs a cozy, cabin-style feel, and the roof-mounted solar array, composting toilet, and gas range means the next owner will be able to hit the road without sacrificing too many of the comforts of home. In addition to the extensive woodwork, the seats and the door cards are sporting new fabric, so the vibe in here should feel fresh.

Importantly, there’s also been a lot of work to the greasy bits, to ensure that this old camper is as comfortable on the road as it is when its parked. Thanks to a Garret turbo, a water-to-air intercooler, a water meth injection setup, and a full Exhaust System, it’s said to cruise comfortably at 75 mph. Now, I don’t know about you? But I think that’s pretty impressive for something that’s over three decades old with the drag coefficient of a brick.  For the record, the brakes have been done too, so it should stop as well as it goes.

According to the listing, the pop-up sleeping area on the roof makes it one of just 13 so equipped. And while that means any kind of replacement parts are going to be unobtainium, if you’re flush enough to spend close to 70 large on an old camper? You probably have to coin to find someone who can custom fit something if it ever goes pear shaped. Head over to the auction site to see more pictures of this killer rig, then hit me up and let me know what you think. Is this a crazy price for something this old? Or is that just the market right now?
